"When Spurs captain Tim Duncan fell to the AT&T Center floor, clutching his face with both hands after being poked in the eye early in Saturday's game against Spanish National League power Caja Laboral, fellow Spurs big man Matt Bonner feared the worst.

"I was worried about his eye," said Bonner, who replaced Duncan after the injury occurred with 8:48 remaining in the first quarter of the Spurs' 108-85 preseason victory. "I was hoping it was still in there.

"Turns out it was, and I hope it will heal up and look like it did."

Caja Laboral's Stanko Barac, a 7-foot-2, 245-pound center from Croatia, caught Duncan in the eye as the two tangled in pursuit of a rebound. Duncan dropped to the floor, and when the ball bounced out of bounds and play stopped, the Spurs called an immediate timeout to give head athletic trainer Will Sevening a chance to check the injury.

Duncan left the court and remained in the locker room until late in the second period. On his return, he told coach Gregg Popovich he was cleared to play, but Popovich didn't use him again until the second half, admitting he had to be convinced by Sevening and the team doctor that his big man was all right."
