"Veteran Tennessee cornerback Cortland Finnegan has reached the promised land.

After years of striving and lobbying for the recognition, Finnegan has been voted as being the NFL's Dirtiest Player in a midseason poll conducted by The Sporting News.

And by dirty we don't mean the guy with the most muck on his uniform.

We're talking nasty deeds here and it's a distinction that Finnegan will hold close to his heart.

In the poll of 100 players, Finnegan received 19 votes, distancing himself from the Steelers duo of linebacker James Harrison and wide receiver Hines Ward, who last season received the dubious honour.

Earlier in the season, Finnegan talked about striving to be No. 1.

"It's a compliment, that's absolutely a compliment," Finnegan said. "He (Ward) was voted the league's dirtiest player, so you've got to give it up for him. I'm No. 6 right now, but I'm aspiring to one day, hopefully be No. 1."

That day has arrived. Take a bow, "
