"Most of his teammates already had dressed and left LP Field, yet Titans defensive end William Hayes sat shirtless in front of his locker, shaking his head.

About 45 minutes earlier, he had Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton in his grasp on a second-and-25 at midfield in the fourth quarter. Orton escaped and heaved the ball downfield, where Titans safety Chris Hope was called for pass interference in the end zone, and two plays later the Broncos scored the game-winning touchdown in a 26-20 victory.

"If I make that play,'' Hayes said, "we really have them in trouble and we probably end up winning. That play could've won the game. I still can't get that play out of my head.''

Hayes was far from being the only Titan with a reason to kick himself on this Sunday. Tennessee let a winnable game slip away because its offense was inept in the second half, its defense was worn down, and its special teams committed a blunder at the worst time.

Now the Titans (2-2) find themselves in a tough spot at the quarter-mark of the season. They joined the Colts and Jaguars in a logjam behind the Texans (3-1) in the AFC South, and four of their next five games are on the road.

After a trip to Dallas, the Titans visit Jacksonville, San Diego and Miami, with a home game against Philadelphia thrown in the middle.

"We expected to be 4-0 or 3-1 at the worst. … We didn't get it done,'' fullback Ahmard Hall said. "So it is definitely gut-check time. But this is a resilient team, and we're going to get over it.''"
