So I've been listening to alot of Tom Waits at the moment, his stuff is so broad. Because of my love for beat literature and my "beat-esque" lifestyle, i find a certain solace (spelling?) in Waits' music. Its especially his earlier stuff, along with his hard, heavily percussive, "polka" stuff. The lyrics are things i can find a connection to, they are understandable to me and at times are like reading a book of philosophy and thinking "this guy just summed up exactly how i am feeling about life and love and society and the mind in a couple of sentences!". So some of my favourite songs are: Lie to me (thats on youtube if you wanna check it out), Big in japan, Temptation, Chocolate Jesus...So guys hopefully some of you appreciate tom waits as much as i do and you can recomend similar artists to me, so if you do like his stuff, respond to post and share your opinions, even if you dont like him. I just hate making threads that get no responses, it makes me feel so unloved. jk. anyway, go on, tell me all i need to know.

Kommienezuepadt! We can't be late. We can't be late. So anyway, yeah, I've started to gain an appreciation for Tom Waits, but that's the influence of my friends. I've got a group of friends I freestyle with in NOLA, and for some random reason they love Tom Waits. Before that, I was just a casual Waits fan (if that's possible), listening to songs like "Ice Cream Man," etc., but damn, he's a gem. Haha, I remember this one time there was this girl in my friends room, and we were all freestyling for her, and then out of nowhere my friend's like "You know what we need to do for her? Tom Waiiiiits." And so we turned on "Kommienezuepadt" and started dancing around the room like the kid in that clip, scaring the absolute hell out of this girl, haha. There was this other time we were going on a smoke ride, just driving out to the middle of nowhere Louisiana. I'll never forget it. I was stressed about this test I had the next day, and my friends were going on a ride and invited me along, but the way they prefaced it was, "You've got to understand. Once you enter this car, you may never come back. We may just keep driving and driving." I was like, yeah okay, whatever. I mean, that's my friends and they like to be stupid and say random things. But we get in the car and drove for maybe five or six hours, and right when we were in the middle of some nowhere bayou area, this huge oil refinery or something comes out of the distance. My baked friends had the idea to drive into it, and we did, and we blasted "Kommienezuepadt" the whole way. It was like driving into hell and the perfect music for driving into hell. I'm sorry, that story was boring and went nowhere, but this topic just jogged that memory out of nowhere.
love him. too bad he hasn't done a NYC show in years. have all his cds. I'd still say my favorite is possibly Bone Machine or Swordfishtrombone.
Rain Dogs is my favorite. Orphans is a close second. That's a monster of an album. You guys hear hear how hes playing the devil in the new Terry Gilliam flick. He's probably the most interesting artist I've ever known of. Such a talent.
