It was revealed Friday that Donaghy is under federal investigation for possibly betting on games and associating with organized crime.

Donaghy officiated NBA games for 13 seasons before resigning two weeks ago.

The U.S. attorney's office in Brooklyn is investigating whether Donaghy wagered on games for two years, then, starting sometime in December 2006, agreed to affect the final winning margin of games in which he was part of the standard three-person officiating crew.

Two games Donaghy refereed in January demonstrate what investigators might be looking for, experts said. On Jan.15, the Philadelphia 76ers were originally favoured to beat the Toronto Raptors by a point. Bets came in so heavily on the Raptors that they eventually were favoured to win by a point instead. Toronto won 104-86.

Wow, this is some hard evidence that this guy did. I think he did, but how does a lawyer for him prove this wrong.

Not first time NBA referee flagged for gambling

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Commissioner calls scandal 'worst situation I've ever experienced' with league
NEW YORK – NBA commissioner David Stern insisted allegations a former referee bet on games was an isolated case and called it the worst situation he had experienced during his tenure governing the league.

"Mr. Donaghy is the only referee alleged to have bet on NBA games and disclosed confidential information to others," Stern said Tuesday during a packed news conference. "I'll say it again, I understand this is an isolated case."

The FBI is investigating former referee Tim Donaghy for allegedly betting on games he officiated during the last two seasons. He is expected to turn himself in at U.S. District Court in Brooklyn later this week or early next week, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

    Update

Stern calls tainted referee 'rogue, isolated criminal'

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The problem the NBA faces now is not the continued fallout from the greatest betting scandal in league history – the act of a "rogue, isolated criminal," according to David Stern – but how to ensure the league never again has to defend itself from accusations of game-fixing that cuts to the very heart of professional sports.

And the commissioner has vowed to do whatever the law will allow, and at whatever cost must be incurred, to restore fans' faith that every game is decided on the merit of the athletes and not the whims of a crooked official.

"I can stand here today and pledge that we will do every look back possible to analyze our processes and seek the best advice possible to see if there are changes that should be made and procedures that should be implemented to continue to assure fans that we are doing the best we possibly can," said Stern, who termed the Tim Donaghy gambling scandal "the most serious situation and worst situation" he has seen in his 40 years with the NBA as a fan, lawyer and commissioner.

If we have to breakdown one of our games that were officiated by Donoghy, it should be Game 6 of the playoffs against the Nets.

I don't think the NBA can recover from this scandal.

Maybe, but I think now people are just gunna look for games he did, which is not a bad thing, but I have reason to believe he didn't point shave every game he officiated.

disappointing man. NBA wont be able to recover for this, and more people are going to be questioning the play of refs next year.

I hope when Tim is questioned, he names bookies and such. In this case, it won't hurt the NBA as much because if only he is involved then he looks bad, but the NBA keeps its integrity. Tim Donaghy is not the face of the NBA, so what ever he confesses looks bad on him. Like I said, I hope no one named is a major part of the NBA.

I really hope now the NBA drops it's attitude that it's officials are beyond errors and never make mistakes. Not to say they are all on the take, but start looking at some of the games and reviewing them more seriously.

I'll always remember 2 or 3 years ago we were playing the Bucks (I think) and time was winding down. Carter goes to the basket with 3 seconds on the clock and gets brutally hacked across the arms, no call. It was so bad you could see the way his body bent from all the contact. Officials thought nothing of it, and frankly it was just another blown call for the Zebras.
