    Traded Player Exception (TPE)
The Value of our TPE is $1,221,000.00 and we can bring back a player making up to $1,321,000.00

NOTE: In each case listed are players that fall within our TPE salary limits, even if the chances of obtaining him are unrealistic.

We have one exception that is time critical – the Traded Player Exception, or TPE. Below we’ll list various scenarios and available players to help you decide who, if anyone, you think the Magic should pursue. Keep in mind this exception expires on Friday, August 1st, 2003. So, we use it or lose it. Other teams could find our TPE attractive for many reasons. For teams that already have a TPE (or more), then can add our TPE to theirs (this is the only time exceptions can be combined). Another would be if a team is trying to dump salary to avoid the Luxury Tax (TPE doesn’t count against Luxury Tax, only against Salary Cap). Teams could also use our exception to rid themselves of a player that we wouldn’t trade a player for.

Traded Player Exception (TPE) – this occurs when a trade has happened and the equity didn’t quite match (as was the case for us with the Don Reid trade). This is a "credit" teams can use to replace the salary of a player traded to another team. This credit cannot be used to sign free agents -- it is only available for trades. This exception cannot be combined with other exceptions (like the DPE). Only if you have multiple TPE’s can you combine (we don’t).

Salary Cap Reduction to AVOID Luxury Tax

First, let’s look at teams and players who might find this TPE useful because they’re looking to reduce salary to avoid the Luxury Tax (which only uses actually salaries to count against it, not exceptions).

Indiana - want to create a larger TPE and move further away from the luxury tax:
    (1) Primoz Brezec
    (2) Jamison Brewer

Memphis - over 15 guaranteed contracts and is right at luxury tax
    (1) Ryan Humphrey - Two years remaining on contract, unlikely anything happens here.
    (2) Robert Archibald
    (3) Chris Owens (*)

New Jersey - might want to get further away from luxury tax
    (1) Brandon Armstrong
    (2) Jason Collins
    (3) Tamar Slay

Seattle – May want to decrease their payroll
    (1) Joseph Forte
    (2) Ansu Sesay (*)
    (3) Ronald Murray (*)

[C] The Rest of the SIGNED Players within our TPE Salary

    Atlanta - Dan Dickau

Chicago - Trenton Hassell (*), Lonny Baxter, Roger Mason Jr.

    Cleveland - Carlos Boozer

    Dallas - Antoine Rigudeau

Denver - Ryan Bowen, Junior Harrington, Predrag Savovic (*), Vincent Yarbrough (*)

L.A. Lakers - Kareem Rush, Jannero Pargo

Miami - Sean Lampley (*), Rasual Butler (*)

New Orleans - Bryce Drew, Robert Traylor

    New York - Frank Williams

Philadelphia - Monty Williams, Efthimos Rentzias, Samuel Dalemburt, John Salmons, Sam Clancy (*)

Portland - Zach Randolph, Qyntel Woods, Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje (*)

    Sacramento - Gerald Wallace

    San Antonio - Tony Parker

Toronto - Michael Bradley, Chris Jefferies

Utah - Curtis Borchardt, Jarron Collins, Andrei Kirilenko, Raul Lopez

Washington - Juan Dixon, Brendan Haywood

[D] Possible Sign and Trade options (UNSIGNED Free Agents)

The idea of this would be too offer more the minimum to someone the Magic might want to sign around Training camp time and who might not be available if they wait that long. If this happens, the contract would probably be for three years with only the first year guaranteed.

Travis Best (Miami) - Despite being under 6-foot, he is a capable backup. May consider this option.

Vladimir Stepania (Miami) - While a lot of Magic fans like him, the Heat will probably re-sign for a little bit more money with their loads of cap space.

Dion Glover (Atlanta) - Glover is probably waiting to see what happens with the Atlanta Ownership situation.

Kenny Anderson (New Orleans) - He would be a sold backup but could he accept his role?

Donnell Harvey (Denver) - A bit of a tweener.

Stephen Jackson (San Antonio) - Likely gets more money elsewhere.

(*) = Non Guaranteed Contract (players can be waived and their salary taken off the cap)
