Ok, FOMW suggested this trade a while ago and at the time I didn't like it. But I was thinking about it some more just now, and it could make some sense for the Nets to try and acquire him at this time. Some reasons why the Nets do it: - Shaq's contract only runs for two more years fitting into their 2010 free agency plans - He brings a veteran presence and the young players on the team will love him - The Nets have some spot up shooters to surround him with in Simmons, Yi, Anderson, Nachbar(if they bring him back),Marcus(if they keep him) - He can provide some rebounding, post-defense and post-offense - He likes Vince - He's marketable - The comedy value would be great The negatives against trying to acquire him would be his age(past his prime) and the amount of games he could miss. But the Nets have some depth in the front court to withstand a Shaq injury in Lopez, Boone, Yi, Sean, Anderson So what about a trade of: Krstic (Sign and trade) Swift Hassell for Shaq Suns would get a young center who the Nets don't want to commit long term to because of their 2010 free agency plans. They would also get a backup big and an expiring contract in Swift. Nets lineup: Harris/M.Williams Carter/CDR/Ager Simmons/Nachbar Yi/S.Williams/Anderson Shaq/Lopez/Boone Maybe they could package Simmons, Boone, and Marcus + pick(s) for a better SF. And then use their MLE and/or LLE on a backup PG and third string center.
I'm not sure if he's the kind of veteran presence you'd want around such a young group of players. Sure he can be a great mentor. But he also brings a helluva lot of drama with him wherever he goes. And with his declining skills, it seems like we're more and more of the drama and less and less of his actual production.

1) Shaq isnt worth it unless you just want ticket sales. 2) Suns would also want back a young running/defensive minded big back...... You made a fair case though, but its not worth it

You made a good argument, and won me over with his contract only going until 2010, but <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Krstic (Sign and trade) Swift Hassell for Shaq</div> Not gonna happen.

Krstic could end up being damn good, but he is far too much of an unknown right now. Also add that Shaq would immediately stop trying to be in shape if traded to NJ, so he would be a huge contract that never plays.
They would still like back Sean Williams. So Amare could guard the lesser big all the time. I know were counting down til 2010, but I still dont want to invest 40 mil on 12/8. Something we can basically expect from Lopez.

Shaq's risk of missing games and being out of shape. And with Krstic because of his knee injury. But some mitigating factors are the Nets do it because they don't want to commit long term to Krstic anyways even if he were healthy since they want capspace for 2010. For the Suns they get some young talent and a backup big in Swift with an expiring contract. And if Van Horn is included they save some money.

Your trade does nothing to help them </div> What? They are getting back Krstic who can definitely help them now. And the trade will only go through if they are confident in Krstic's knee through a medical exam. Just a question if Krstic is mentally ready about his knee. He has rehabbed it for a long time now and played on it last year and could be ready to go by the start of the season. And Swift is a decent backup big who has a 6 million expiring contract which could be valuable in a mid-season trade.
Also, Krstic doesnt run, he doesnt really fit. Which is why Im glad you didnt include Marcus Some people had Marcus and/or Krstic going to GS or Denver I just dont see this as a good fit on either end. I think PHX is just going to hope to land a Posey, Magette/ Pietrus type and make one last run.

He can space the floor for Nash and Stoudamire on pick and rolls and can also run the pick and pop with Nash. And they could still try to land those SF's after a trade like this. They would save money in this trade by taking back less money in contracts, and if Van Horn is included his salary comes off their books after a small buyout I believe. Suns love saving money.
I like the idea especially since shaqs family is from NJ. Financially for the deal to work it would have to be Kristic Swift Hassel KVH From a PHX viewpoint it doesnt make much sense for them. Unless they really like Kristic and feel Hassell would be a good defender on their team since they need defense. They would be getting an expiring 6.2 in Swift and 3.72 KVH buyout, so they save $10million. I defintly wouldnt give PHX any picks in that deal. I love it from a Nets standpoint because his deal is up in 2010 and it would be fun to watch VC and shaq play together but its highly unlikely this deal is ever made. On a side not i think Swift would excel playing in PHX, also if this was to happen the Nets marketing dept would be licking their chops between Yi and Shaq could you imagine the publicity in China alone!
I think this trade is perfect! The Suns are CHEAP, and want expirings, and Shaq would be great for developing the youths. Nets would be closer to selling out with draws like VC, Shaq, and Yi so the Nets make that much more money on revenues from tickets, jerseys, etc., so it would cover the costs of Shaq's big contract. Also, if the Nets can stay somewhat competitive, and VC plays well, Shaq would play for the vet's minimum to play with VC and LBJ/Dwade. I'd be willing to package Krstic, Swift, KVH and 2009 2nd rounder. This will also give the Suns money to get a SF they want... Swift's contract is very valuable for a S&T, especially midseason.
Dont see Kerr giving up on Shaq after half a season for scrubs. His job is on the line, hes looking to add for one last run.
