Will start off by saying I don't know if they do it, but they seem to be at sort of a crossroads with their team, so maybe it gives them a small reset, who knows. Agreed to on draft night, official after free agent moratorium. Freeland, #10, and Minnesota's 2nd rounder for Spencer Hawes and Evan Turner. They seem to have lost a lot of their favor in Turner, but maybe that's just an outside perspective, I dunno. This gives them two lotto picks at 10 and 11, and clears roughly 11 million more off their books for the offseason. They can tank the season with youth, and push for 2014 offseason and draft, or sign Bynum, and still have a good chunk of change left over for a backcourt mate for Jrue. I don't know what they might think. I don't know if they do, either. For us, Olshey said defensive rebounding, and Hawes is a decent defensive rebounder. He grabs over 20% of available DRBs, around where Faried, Horford, Noah and Jordan are at for defensive rebounding. His overall TRB% would be a lot better if he didn't play high post, thus making his ORB% suffer. He doesn't need touches, which seems like something Olshey is looking for, but can still hit shots at an ok enough clip to not be a Przybilla type liability on offense. He's a decent enough passer as well, so could work well with Aldridge high low. He also blocks over a shot a game, was 14th in total blocks, and 15th in BPG this season. I dunno if they'd give up on Turner, but he hasn't shown the improvement they'd wanted out of a 2nd overall pick, and will be up for an extension. Maybe they can get more breaking the pieces up. Including Freeland in the deal, our salary would be at roughly 52.5 million, so we'd still have 7.5 million to play with. We'd have a roster of: Lillard/ Wes/Turner/Barton Batum/Claver Aldrdge/ Hawes/Leonard We'd have 7.5 million to spend, as well as a the mini MLE of 2.6 to potentially bring Maynor back with, and 2 2nd round picks. 7.5 might at least get you in the ball park of Millsap, or someone else deserving of a 4 year, 32 million-ish dollar deal. Lillard/Maynor Wes/Turner Batum/Claver Aldridge/Millsap Hawes/Leonard ????
I think the biggest problem with this trade is that it doesn't bring back the defensive center that the Blazers supposedly covet.
I was really trying to massage a Spencer Hawes on this team a few months ago. Personally, I just think he's an average defender. I think we need to focus on a above average defender and not so much on the offense. I mean offense is really a plus, but I think our lack of defense is more pressing.
The further along we get in this process the less encouraged I get. I really hope Olshey has something great up his sleeve because the realistic options just dont fit with what we need. And Im not sure Im willing to settle make a small upgrade that comes with a whole other set of issues.
I like Evans better than Turner. Would much rather go after Reke either by signing him outright or engaging SAC in a S&T. I like Hawes, though. Guys like him, and Robin Lopez are who we need to go after. Capable starting Cs who are young, but have some experience and will get reasonable contracts.
I would rather have Evans than Turner as well. I think getting out of Sactown would do wonders for his career.
Holy Crap I thought Hawes was like 30 for some reason. Feels like he has been around forever! Maybe I'm getting him mixed up with Brad Miller or something
Can't get excited about either of those. Hawes put up surprisingly good numbers a couple of times but he's soft as wet tissue paper and also obnoxious.
You posted about Hawes being a Republican before. Anyone who rates a player based on their politics cannot be taken seriously. ETA - I don't want Hawes at all, but only because he isn't what is needed for this team.
I realize the #10 pick may not pan out but it could be an All-Star. I'd rather gamble on the pick being an All-Star than deal it for average players like Turner and Hawes. We need to hit one more home run before we can start going after singles.
The suggested trade aside, I'm surprised that the consensus is that Evans would be a more valuable contributor than Turner, especially with this Blazers roster. A Lillard/Evans backcourt would be a complete nightmare in terms of offensive efficiency.
The idea of Evans is growing on me. I guess I would have to see stats but in my mind I remember him as a pretty good slasher and finisher at the rim. It seems like that could open up the floor for our other shooters and it would get us more easy transition buckets. I wouldnt say he is the priority for me but if there is a scenario that we can make it happen I am starting to lean towards "taking a chance" type of player with High risk high reward ability. Anyone know where I can get stats specifically for finishing at the rim?
absolutely, this trade does not move the "needle" at all, Hawes is nada, rather draft a young big and Turner has not shown enough IMO
