This is good for us. I wanted around 8 mill or so, and this falls pretty much in line with that. Can't complain. 7 years also instead of 8, which I like as well.

Good deal. Now move onto Cally. And kick the tires on Girardi.

Just glad he's signed. $8.5M is still a lot of money and cap hit, but he's a key part of this team.

Yeah it definitely is a big hit, but there were people throwing out numbers of 9, 9.5 or 10. I was like Chuck, I was iffy once the hit went over 8 but at the end of the day .5m is not going to make or break our cap. Especially with the cap going up soon. Good deal, now he can focus on hockey and hopefully Sather can turn his attention to getting some O here

It is a lot, and I would have liked lower 8's better, but I can't complain over 300 or 400 K extra. I think 8 was always the bar this was set at, so 8.5 isn't terrible considering that. Now we just need to hope the cap goes up a reasonable amount.

Hank does have a 1.5 mill higher cap hit than any other goalie though. So he better be a stud for many more years to earn that.

He'll be 32 in March, so i don't see him being this productive in his late 30's, who knows. Then again, by the time he's in the last years of his contract i'm sure other goalies will have surpassed him in $'s.

To me the timing of this is horrible....im not saying Hank isn't one of the best goalies in the league, but to give him 1.5 more than the next goalie without knowing if the system in place in the years before him helped his stats are not. is he THAT much better than the next goalie?

13.92% of the cap tied up to Hank...the next is raask at10.89% that is almost 2 million dollars tied up in cap space...

and rask is 5 years younger...

hope we do not regret this

    1. I am sure they have some idea what the cap situation will be next season. Same reason the Pens went crazy to sign their big guys to huge deals.
    2. I am sure years 6 & 7 will be a little troublesome at 37 or so, but we should get at least 4 or 5 top years out of him on this new deal, barring injury. So you may pay for all the great years he has given us in the last two years of this deal. Just the way it is.
    3. Remember he already has a cap hit of 6.875. So this is only a raise of 1.625 mill or so. Not awful really.

This is really the best we could have asked for IMO. Like I said, maybe 300 or 400 K less, but he was always going to be around 8 at least given how this was playing out.

we all love to get raises but im afraid that their wont be any increase in output. then again you can say that about all pro contracts...you definitely are paying for past production and not necessarily future production.

do hope with the recent increase in TV revenue from Canada that the cap will go up making this raise a mute point

Can't compare Hank contract to Rask.....Hank was a UFA in July, Rask when he signed was an RFA.

This isnt a bad contract, it's the cost of doing business for having the best goalie in the game the past 4-5 years. 8.5 is a big cap hit but really what did people expect when the best goalie in the world (at least before this year) hits the market at 32.

Be glad it wasnt $10m and a 8+ year deal

Now go fix the offense Slats

You are hardly being objective pointing to Hank's playoff record when this team hasnt been able to score forever.

He is a top 3 goalie (at worst) in the NHL. I dont see how you dispute this. If you want to say the deal is too long (debatable) fine. But he is by far the best goalie on the market July 1 and one of the best free agents in the NHL.

Forgive me if I find it funny of fans of other franchises who cannot for the life of them resign ANY of their own existing UFA's tell us we overpaid for resigning a star.

My advice is worry about your own team. Richards will be bought out this summer. And Hank is one of the best goalies in the NHL. Your team has no future, so you worry about that instead of AGAIN concerning yourself with a team all Devil fans claim they don't care about, yet spend a lot of time discussing...LOL.

Even if he goes into decline in 3 years he'll still be a top 10 goalie until hes almost 40.

8.5 is better than the 9 or 10 I was worrying about. This is what the market would pay him as ufa so if you want him you need to buck up as they say and I'm glad the rangers did. Now if Cam continues to impress we have a young trade chip at a position some of the better teams are lacking in and may trade for. With the canada money coming in hard to see how cap doesn't go up exponentially which will water this figure down a little bit. Glad that is a big player for us that is taken care of. Hopefully slats hasn't pulled the trigger on anything due to working on this. Now deal is done so glenny boy lets make some deals get some size and another scorer at forward in here and bring up big mac so our skill players are looking over their shoulders less.
