... at the ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club no-gi grappling tournament) in 2005. GSP was a purple belt at the time, just after losing to Matt Hughes at UFC 50. GSP entered the tournament (66 to 76kg) on short notice. He won his first match against Otto Olson via points but lost to Santos in his second. In 2011, three time world champion Braulio Estima said that GSP had improved enough that he'd be a threat to win the tournament. GSP has expressed interest in competing in it again.

Santos went on to place fourth at the ADCC in 2005. The next year he went to train with his brother Wagnney Fabiano in Toronto. Coincidentally, Fabiano has coached GSP in BJJ. Santos decided to pursue MMA full-time, joining Nova União. As noted on last night's broadcast, Santos was instrumental in the early career of current UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo, coaching and funding the younger fighter's path to the UFC. 33-year old Santos has a 12-4 record not including his bouts on The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 2.
