Twins won't yet commit to one closer

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire still hasn't officially named his closer for the start of the regular season, but he strongly indicated for the first time on Sunday that he will use a combination of right-handers Joe Nathan and Matt Capps until Nathan proves he's fully recovered from last year's Tommy John surgery.

"This early part of the season, it's just not going to happen with Joe going out there three or four days in a row, so Capps will have to close some games, too," Gardenhire said. "It's not a committee, but we're going to kind of use both of them early in the season until we see exactly where Joe is at.

"Right now, he's handled everything we've thrown at him, so we're pretty comfortable. We'll run either one of them out there."Nathan, who had a career 1.87 ERA in six seasons with the Twins while averaging 41 saves per year before missing last season, passed a few tests this week by making a two-inning appearance and pitching in back-to-back games.
