<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP)—North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson was charged Friday with driving after consuming alcohol following an early morning traffic stop.

Lawson was stopped in downtown Chapel Hill because of the loud music coming from the car, said Chapel Hill Police Capt. Jackie Carden. The car smelled of alcohol and a field sobriety test led the officer to file charges, she said.

Because Lawson is not 21, he could be charged with driving after consuming alcohol. He was also charged with violating the city’s noise ordinance and driving with a suspended or revoked license, police said. He was taken into custody and later released. Lawson is scheduled to appear in court July 8.

Neither Lawson nor coach Roy Williams will comment until the legal process runs its course, a school spokesman said in a statement.

He was one of three North Carolina players who declared for the 2008 NBA draft. Lawson has not hired an agent, meaning he could return to school for his junior season.</div>

Not really serious and I'm not going to knock him because everybody drinks underage. But doing this so close to the draft, not smart.

Stupid decision but I don't think it will hurt him much come draft time (if he still declares). Wasn't JJ Redick charged with DUI a couple of days before the draft? It didn't really hurt his stock at all, he still got drafted in the lottery

Ty will still get drafted, but is situation effects him greatly. With alot of the Point and combo gaurds projected to be going early Ty's stock was put up around the fringe or borderline 1st/high second rounder. An incedent this close to the draft could ensure that he gets bumped to a 2nd round choice thus effecting how much he makes not to mention that only 1st round picks are garunteed contracts while 2nd rounders arent. Which means his undersized self has to really play hard to ensure a roster slot.

when ty pulled out of the pre-draft camp after the first day when he played really well, it looks like he has a first round promise. also, there aren't many pg's slotted to go high, and he's a pure point. he'll be fine.

he better hope so. If he feels like he'll drop out of the top 20, then he will go back to school. You'd think that being this close to something this important you you would want to be on your best behavior and not doing any dumbass and immature stuff.

I mean I have nothing against the guy. He's the guy I want Minnesota to trade up for if McHale is dumb enough to pick a bigman over Mayo for. But I try not to be bias, but I'm pretty sure the team that made a promise did so well before a DUI charge came about. And how does that show as a character flaw, when a player is given the piece of mind by hearing that a team places faith in you enough to say they want you (even before all the workouts with other players) and you pay them back by doing something this stupid this close to the draft? Seems ungrateful and disrespectful. This issue only gets magnified at this time. DUI's are starting to pop up more and more among sports players with Jared Allen and even Benson (I don't even want to get started on his dumb-ass!!!) the leagues are really going to start taking this more seriously.

With all this said...if it does effect his draft status, I hope he does fall to where Minnesota can pick him up. I still like him as a player and he can help us at the Point.
