The United States U-23 men's national soccer team, also known as the United States men's Olympic soccer team, is a youth soccer team operated under the auspices of U.S. Soccer. Its primary role is qualification into and competition at the quadriennial Olympic Football Tournament, the next of which is to be held during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England. The team's most recent major tournament was the tournament at the 2008 Summer Olympics, in which the United States team was eliminated in the first round group stage.

The roster can be augmented with three "overage" players, ostensibly possessing veteran experience, during Olympic competition, in accordance with FIFA regulations.

U-23 Camp: Taylor has a few tricks up his sleeve
    [IMG]
Atlético pro already knows 4-3-3 formation, boasts valuable experience

DUISBURG, Germany — It may not be the first name United States fans think of when pondering next summer's squad for the Olympic Games in London, but Tony Taylor just happens to have a few aces up his sleeve for making it.

The 22-year-old forward is currently enjoying the initial Under-23 camp in Germany's Ruhr Vally. The group, which offically begins the drive for Olympic gold, is filled with a wealth of exciting young attackers.

With new U-23 boss Caleb Porter currently busy with his University of Akron job, all these talents are soaking up knowledge on the mandated 4-3-3 system from coaches Claudio Reyna and Tab Ramos.

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi opened the scoring for the USMNT in the first half, but Philadelphia Union forward Jack McInerney equalized for the U-23s in the second half.

Adu takes on next chapter as U-23 leader
Adu's journey has new twist as he aims for Olympic redemption

CARSON, Calif. – It’s been an enormously productive week in January camp for US Soccer, as both the senior and Under-23 national teams have trained for more than a week literally side by side on adjacent practice fields at the Home Depot Center.

The interplay has been frequent, both in twin scrimmages between the squads – in which some players, like Teal Bunbury and Bill Hamid, played for both sides – and in the trickle-down of philosophy from Jurgen Klinsmann to Caleb Porter.

But there’s one thing that’s still a little mind-blowing: watching Freddy Adu quarterback the U-23s and realizing that, at age 22, he has more senior US caps than all but four players on the 20-man senior squad.

US U-23s play to scoreless draw with Saprissa reserves
Caleb Porter plays 11 MLS products in first of two scrimmages in Costa Rica

In the first of two scrimmages to conclude their own January camp, the US U-23 national team played to a scoreless draw on Saturday in Costa Rica against Saprissa’s reserve squad.

The game was played at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa, which has been the site of a number of clashes with MLS sides in recent seasons, including RSL’s 2-1 loss against the Purple Dragons that still sent them to the CONCACAF Champions League final on aggregate.

MLS products dominated Caleb Porter’s lineup, as 11 of the 18 players who appeared for the US represented a domestic sides. The U-23s will conclude their January gathering with another scrimmage against Alajuelense.

US U-23s close January camp with win at Alajuelense
    [IMG]
Taylor's goal gives Olympic hopefuls a 1-0 victory in Costa Rica

The United States U-23 national team closed out the second leg of training camp ahead of Olympic qualifying on a high note, defeating an Alajuelense concoction of first-teamers and reserves 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

Forward Tony Taylor was lone goal scorer, finding the net in the 39th minute after a good build-up from the young Americans.

“We pressured them and did everything we could to win,” Taylor told the Costa Rican club’s website after the match. “[Alajuelense] are a good team, they showed great touch.”

The victory was the first for the US U-23s throughout their January camp, which featured a 4-0 loss and a 1-1 tie in scrimmages against the US men’s national team, and a scoreless tie against the Saprissa reserves on Saturday.

The US U-23s begin CONCACAF Olympic qualifying play on March 22 against Cuba in Nashville, Tenn. They will then face Canada on March 24 and close out Group A competition against El Salvador on March 26.

The Americans must reach the final of the qualifying tournament – which includes Mexico, Honduras, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago in Group B – to participate in the Olympics.

Shea sticks it to FCD as US U-23s come out on top
    [IMG]

FRISCO, Texas — It was an eventful day for Brek Shea and the US Under-23 national team on Wednesday, one in which the FC Dallas midfielder scored the winner in a scrimmage against his own club and was then sent off with a second caution.

In a match that featured nine bookings and two ejections, Caleb Porter’s side survived against FCD for a 2-1 victory

US Olympic team gets down to business vs. Mexico

FRISCO, Texas – After a week-and-a-half of training sessions and scrimmages, the US Under-23 national team's friendly against Mexico has finally arrived.

And with Olympic qualifying set to begin in less than a month against Cuba, US head coach Caleb Porter knows that Wednesday’s matchup at FC Dallas Stadium against CONCACAF’s best (10 pm ET, Univision) will help finalize the roster he takes to Nashville, Tenn., on March 22.

“This is kind of the final game we have to get some questions answered prior to selecting our final roster, and also seeing how the group fits together collectively,” Porter told reporters before Tuesday's closed practice. “But we feel good and we think this game is going to be a good measuring stick. “

US Olympic team dictates match against Mexican U-23s
    [IMG]

In matches against Mexico, the United States are usually on the short side of possession and attacking opportunities.

But Wednesday night at FC Dallas Stadium, head coach Caleb Porter’s side were the ones dictating possession and tempo en route to a 2-0 win in preparation for Olympic qualifying.

“Going into the game, we approached it like we were going to try to get control of the game,” Porter told reporters after the match. “There are different ways to approach the match. We could have approached it in a negative way, sit back, defend, counter, but that’s not the way we wanted to do things.

“We’ve been training to control the game with possession and obviously when we lose the ball to press at the right moments.”

Porter calls in 13 MLSers for Olympic qualifying tournament

US Olympic team head coach Caleb Porter called 13 MLS players into camp on Monday ahead of this month's CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament. The US will attempt to seal their place in the 16-team field for London 2012.

Porter will add a 20th player to the group prior to March 20, the due date for all participating teams to submit their rosters to CONCACAF, after obtaining a release from his respective club.

The squad will gather on March 13 to begin preparations for the qualifying tournament. The US will begin their journey to London at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn., where they will compete for a place in the semifinals against Group A opponents Canada, Cuba and El Salvador beginning on March 22.

ATL Silverbacks to Play U-23 National Team
    [IMG]

The Atlanta Silverbacks will play a closed-door scrimmage against the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team on March 18 at 6 p.m. at Lipscomb University in Nashville, the club announced Tuesday.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity for our team to play against such a high-quality opponent that features players from professional leagues all over the world,” said Silverbacks Head Coach Alex Pineda Chacón. “The scrimmage will be a great test for our team, and it will show us where we are in our preparations for the upcoming NASL season.”

The U-23s are coached by Caleb Porter, who led the University of Akron men’s team to the NCAA national title in 2010. The scrimmage comes just four days before the U.S. kicks off the 2012 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament at LP Field in Nashville, and many of the players who will feature against the Silverbacks on March 18 will be representing the country as a part of that qualifying squad.

The United States named their 19-man qualifying roster yesterday, and it includes players like Freddy Adu (Philadelphia Union), Brek Shea (FC Dallas), Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), and Atlanta area native Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire).

US Olympic team wins big in scrimmage vs. Atlanta
    [IMG]

The US' road to the 2012 Olympics marches on, as the Under-23 men's national team cruised to a 3-0 victory over the NASL Atlanta Silverbacks in a Sunday night scrimmage in Nashville, Tenn. The match was closed to the public.

FC Dallas winger Brek Shea notched a brace in the first half – the first an 18-yard blast across the box – while LA Galaxy midfielder Michael Stephens added a third in the second frame.

All 18 players on the squad got playing time as US U-23 head coach Caleb Porter made seven changes at halftime.

"We accomplished a lot tonight," Porter told ussoccer.com after the match. "We had a chance to apply a lot of the things we have been working on in training and saw some details that we can clean up. Everybody got minutes, and we were able to get some extra fitness for guys who needed it. We came out healthy and with the result, so overall we are very pleased."

US Olympic coach guarantees win vs. El Salvador

The US Olympic team knew they’d have at least one must-win game during CONCACAF qualifying. But they didn’t think it’d come this early.

Saturday’s shock 2-0 loss to Canada in Group A qualifying sets up today’s do-or-die match against El Salvador (9 p.m. ET, Universal Sports and Mun2). Anything but a win and the USA can kiss London goodbye.

At least manager Caleb Porter is confident: “Players are confident we can get the job done. There is no doubt in my mind that we are going to get the result.”

Before the US Olympic team plays, you can watch what is expected to be a Canadian win against Cuba for a place in one of the semifinals in Kansas City (6:30 p.m. ET, Mun2).
