Many people consider the UEFA cup to be a competition of little significance, as if the trophy is an ugly sister, all warty and deformed compared to the beautiful Champions league. I however am of the opinion that the UEFA cup is an extremely valid competition. An event that should be treated with respect and enjoyed all across the continent. Tonight's quarter-finals offer many British teams with the chance to win a significant trophy. The fans of Newcastle, Rangers and Spurs will turn out to watch their teams and the chairmen will attend to count coins, the world is indeed a happy place. So all those who bad mouth the Uefa cup should be ashamed; think of those life changing ties: Newcastle v Zulte-Waregem (both legs) and Parma v Braga, think of all those class acts who have graced the competitions and think especially of the great coverage offered by channel five, the home of true football fans, and there were some who doubted John Barnes (May you all weep in the grave).
