Re: UFC 132: Cruz vs. Faber 2 (Jul. 2nd)

This is gonna be the first fight card that I get to see back in America, and I'm super excited about it. Every one of the Spike TV prelims and main card fights look intriguing at the worst.

-Guillard and Roller is a fight between two guys that look to fight every time. Guillard has had only 8 out of his 27 pro wins go to a decision. Roller has had only one out of his ten professional wins go to a decision. Both guys look to end fights decisively and put things away when they can. If Guillard can avoid grappling, and the submissions of Roller will determine the winner of this fight. I think he can, under a flawless game-plan from Gregg Jackson, and maybe a Guillard/Guida fight next to root out the real contender out of the two?

-Sotiroupolos/Dos Anjos, another very exciting fight. Both are highly regarded Brazilian jiu jitsu black belts, and possibly the finest grapplers in their division. Will be interesting to see if both guys look to avoid the others strength and play the boxing game, or if we get an engagement on the ground. I'm really wanting to see them go to the ground with each other. I'm struggling to pick a winner for this fight.

-Wiman/Siver is a very relevant fight in the 155 division. Both on 3 fight win streaks over some impressive competition. I'm expecting this to turn into your classic wrestler vs striker type battle. If Wiman keeps this fight standing, he will get picked apart by Siver. I believe Wiman will be able to get this fight to the ground, and control Siver.

-Kim vs Condit is an important fight in determining a 170 pound challenger for the future. Condit has lost one fight in his past 11, Kim has on paper never tasted defeat, and both guys are looking to establish themselves as legit. Kim is tough, and will look to grind out a decision over Condit. Condit is a warrior, I have major man love for Condit. He goes 150% all fight, every fight. I think his active guard, always looking for a sweep or submission, mixed with his much better striking will allow Condit to win this fight. Honestly, I'm just biased towards Condit and that's why I'm picking him to win.

-Ortiz vs Bader is intriguing in name recognition, Tito is one of the sports biggest stars of all time, and a pioneer of the sport. Along with Couture, Coleman and Severn they made ground and pound fighting what it is today. Plus it's always intriguing to hear what excuse Ortiz will have for his next loss. Ortiz struggles against all talented wrestlers, and I expect this to be no different than the Hamil fight, except Bader has more power and could end this via 3rd round KO.

-Leben vs Silva I'm expecting to be a wild one round contest, pretty similar to Leben vs Stann. Both guys look to knock the other guy out, and like to please the crowd, so I'm expecting a wild one. I'll be dissapointed if it's anything less than an exciting fight.

-Faber vs Cruz has potential to be as exciting of a main event as will have all year in the UFC. Throw out their first fight, happened at a different weight class, and both guys are much better now than they were four years ago especially Cruz. Cruz will be looking to move around, use active footwork, create angles, and be an in and out fighter. Faber is gonna look to get inside, beat up Cruz, and eventually end this fight via knockout or submission from knock down. I think Cruz will get the better of the fight in the early goings, but eventually Faber will get his timing, and be able to end this fight via 4th round Rear Naked Choke from a knock down.

Njokuani/Winner was pretty amazing. Winner took a massive beating in the first round. Surprised he kept going. If ever there was going to be a fight where the corner threw in the towel, it was one like that.

dos Anjos' knockout of Sotiropolous was unexpected. Good for him. Terrible result for GSot who goes back to the middle of the pack and will probably have to string five or six wins together before getting to where he was.

Guillard/Roller was predictable. Roller didn't attempt to make the most of his wrestling background and Guillard lit him up. He is moving up fast. If he can avoid going to the ground he is as good a lightweight as there is in the UFC. Too bad his ground game is so unpolished. Guillard/Stout would be fun. Guillard/Siver, too.

Edit: hearing Guillard/Pettis is possible. That would be nice.

Condit/Kim was pretty spectacular. Kim is a blanket and it's good to see him get derailed before making it all the way to a title shot. Condit put it on him and looks to be the next top contender at welterweight but will take a fight in the meantime. Dangerous.

    Ortiz/Bader LOL WTF!

I agreed with the Siver/Wiman decision. Oddly, so did DFW who tends to be outraged with close decisions or upsets. Siver won rounds 1 and 3. Wiman always wins one round and expects that to carry the fight for him. Five of six have gone the distance for him--hard for him to blame the judges.

Leben/Silva damn son, let's not relive that.

Finally I thought the main event sucked. Yeah, sue me. There is a difference between busy and fighting hard. Both guys fought busy. Cruz is becoming the king of jab and jog. He got clipped more, did less damage, and had take-downs that amounted to nothing, and somehow that earned him a 50-45 on one judge's scorecard. I thought Cruz won (the champ doesn't have to win, the challenger does) but was unimpressed with the fight.

Good to great card but a bit disappointing with Leben and Ortiz winning.

50-45 that's fucked up. Urijah did have a few knock downs and I thought he won 2 of the rounds but not the fight.

I'm surprised at how he would get Cruz up near the fence and then back out, but Cruz seemed to be the more powerful man when they grappled so maybe that's why. Faber's stand up is decent but he can't stop guys and it's diverse enough to out point them either. Bottom line, if he doesn't have a wrestling advantage he's outclassed.

Was a very good night of fights IMO.

Ortiz won. I bet you anything Liddell is blowing up DFW for a shot at him.

    Condit is so fucking beastly.

Love both Leben and Wand. Sucks to see Wand go out like this.
