UFC 94: most successful UFC PPV ever?

This past weekend's "UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn II" event, which drew the largest-ever attendance in Las Vegas and the sixth-largest gate in UFC history, could also account for the biggest pay-per-view score in the organization's 16-year existence.

UFC President Dana White told the Las Vegas Sun that he expects PPV totals for the Jan. 31 event to reach 1.3 million.

Although the UFC doesn't officially release PPV figures, UFC 66 in 2006 is believed to own the current record with 1.05 million buys.

That event featured then-UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell's successful title defense over Tito Ortiz, and Keith Jardine's shocking knockout of Forrest Griffin in the co-main event.

UFC 66, which took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, also scored the largest gate in UFC and North American MMA history with $5,397,300.

However, UFC 66's PPV numbers got a challenge from the UFC's final major events of the 2008 fight season. UFC 91 in November (Couture vs. Lesnar) and UFC 92 in December (Griffin vs. Evans and Nogueira vs. Mir) are both believed to have done close to one million total buys.

However, UFC 94 was poised for success from its official announcement. In addition to boasting one of the biggest fights in UFC history (with UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre vs. UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn), the event received unparalleled promotion. The UFC and Spike TV aired a three-part, $2-million "UFC Primetime" series to preview the show, ESPN's MMA Live program covered the show on site, "SportsCenter" interviewed St. Pierre live after his victory, and an influx of mainstream media members were credentialed for the show.

Additionally, the UFC launched a three-stop publicity tour (Las Vegas, Montreal and Hawaii) a full two months before the event date to promote the show.
