In hindsight, isin't it great that Justin Smith never boarded that plane bound from San Fran to Minnesota? I'm not saying that J.S. isn't good (quite the opposite) but if he came to Minny and accepted the cash we probably wouldn't have needed to pull the trigger for Allen since we would've already had a pass rusher and wouldn't have felt the need to give up a 1st and both 3rds (which doesn't bother me in the least with the way thingshave turned out). So in light of this revelation I'd like to give a "Big-ups" to Justin Smith for making me mad at first to being thankful for the brush off...lol.
Justin Smith is nowhere near Allen's league. Allen is one of the best DEs in the league... so go ahead and call it like it is.

Minny had a huge contract offer in mind for Smith. if he signed with Minny and then as it came out later that Allen was available Minny wouldn't be able to afford him let alone justify to the rest of the defensive line why they have two seperate contracts worth more than everyone elses combined. And that doesn't even get to the fact of what Minny was gonna have to give up in picks. I know Allen is lightyears ahead of Smith on skill-level, but with the money they would have gave smith along with the contract length he wanted...we woulda been in salary-cap hell. It's all what-if really...but you should read a post before choosing to castize it...

I was merely telling you to call it like it is; that you landed one of the best DEs in the league instead of a so-so Justin Smith.
Its not all that one sided though....they could have signed Justin Smith for about half of the guarantee Allen got, they wouldnt have been exposing themselves to a guy that is one drink from being banned for a year, they could have traded back into the bottom of the 1st round, picked up extra picks and still had their choice of any WR in this draft, and with a young developing QB, giving him weapons could be the difference between boom or bust....they could have easliy come out of the process with Justin Smith, Devin Thomas, Brandon Flowers, and another 2nd or 3rd pick....and paid less for all 4 than they did for Allen....

But, I'm happy everything went down the way it did though. Allen is a beast....a highly paid beast...but a beast none the less. And I understand about the issues with his past, but it's just that...his past. people can change and it's been well over a year since the issue happened. I'm sure that fact that if he messes up throughout the next year, Minnesota gets back 47 mil from the contract , that counts for some motivation, although I'd like to have faith in the fact that he is older and has learned from his mistakes. From interviews with Coaches and teammates, Allen is well liked and respected already throughout the locker room. Even Pat Williams seems to have taken a liking to him and wants to look out for Allen. I'm sure with his team's support and a strong season....he will continue to turn things around. He may not get another 15 1/2 sacks in 14 games, but the impact he'll have with the rest of this line...any and everyone has a chance at racking up personal best in sacks this year.
