“The question was asked: is it more difficult to go 10-3 or to sustain that level?” BK said. “For me, it’s much more difficult to sustain it because you have to be able to build your program to a level of consistency that gets your players to react on a day-to-day basis on a level of unconscious competence. That is, habit-forming. Going into year two, we want to get to a habit-forming where our kids perform and compete on a day-to-day basis in a consistent fashion. It’s what we’re excited about in year two.”

In other words:

“You don’t have to think about it,” BK said. “I want our players to have a habit of how they prepare each and every week. We don’t have to tell them how to practice and how to prepare for a game. When you get to that level of consistency within your program, you know what to expect on game day. You don’t worry about it. You don’t worry, ‘Are we ready, or are we not ready?’ It comes down to just playing the game.”

BK – and Dustin Grutza and DeAngelo Smith, as well – readily admit the team isn’t there quite yet.

“We definitely need some game time before you can get to that point,” Grutza said. “That’s a peak. You try as much as you can to get to that point, where you’re out there and not thinking about it while you’re playing. That’s all in the preparation. We know the checks, we know that we do this, we know where to be at the right time. That’s what we’re preparing to do. The test is to see if we’re at that level yet. If we can continue to work as hard as he’s pushing us, we can get to that level.”

Said Smith: “Once you get in the playbook and get to know things, it just comes faster. Now that we know coach Kelly’s philosophy on what he wants done, everybody knows how to work fast and get it to where he wants to be. Unconscious competence, it’s just understanding what he wants.”
