Union Olimpija Claim Slovenian Supercup

Union Olimpija won over Helios Domzale 67:56 to claim the Slovenian Supercup last night. The Slovenian champs made their move with a 22-2 tear that bridged the third and fourth quarters and set the stage for an easy win. Marko Milic (199-G-77) and Vlado Ilievski (190-G-80, agency: World Sport Agency) led the way with 14 points apiece and Saso Ozbolt (188-G-81, agency: World Sport Agency) added 12. Domen Zerak (203-C-79, agency: VTBM/SRBM) led the way for the losing team with 13 points in defeat. Ziga Zagorc (188-G-84, agency: VTBM/SRBM) nailed 11 and Snow scored 9.
It seemed that the game started easy for the hosts that won the opening quarter 25:14. Helios Domzale however did not panic and stayed calm in the game. They answered with 22:9 in the second period to take 36:34 lead at the halftime.
The Final remained tough in the third period when it was time for the Union Olimpija to come back into the campaign. The hosts posted 18:8 in the third for 52:44 at the end of it. In the beginning of the last stanza Union increased to 57:44 and dominated the court until the end. After 15:12 in the last frame Olimpija increased to 67:56 as a total.
Both teams started another season with a great game in the Slovenian Supercup. This weekend Union Olimpija will open the upcoming season with pre-season Tournament Ljubljana 2008 which will take place in Tivoli arena. Clubs which will take part in this tournament will be top Euroleague teams such as Panathinaikos Athens, Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul, Maccabi Electra Tel-Aviv and home team Union Olimpija Ljubljana.

Yes, basketball exists in Slovenia. Both these teams are considered decent+ at a European level. Olimpija have been known to pull off timely upsets in the Euroleague...Both teams represent Slovenia in the Adriatic League.

Sarunas Jasikevicius, Bostjan Nachbar, Yotam Halperin, Rasho Nesterovic, Beno Udrih, Jiri Welsch, Ariel McDonald, Primoz Brezec and Goran Dragic all played for Olimpija sometime in their careers.
