The Irish Sports Council (gov't funded) doesn't recognize MMA as a sport, therefore the Dublin City Council won't organize an event for their new champion. Normally they would, as was the case with their rugby squad. Fans are petitioning the city but so far are being ignored. http://www.irishexaminer.com/breaki...ming-reception-for-conor-mcgregor-711529.html
http://www.joe.ie/sport/confirmed-c...n-civic-reception-in-dublin-next-month/523769 New UFC Featherweight Champion of the World Conor McGregor will have a civic reception held in his honour in his hometown of Dublin next month. The announcement comes on the back of an online petition for the Dublin City Council to stage an official homecoming for McGregor that was set-up in the wake of his magnificent achievement at the weekend and quickly acquired thousands of signatures. Dublin City Council today confirmed, after discussions with McGregor and his management team, that a reception will be held towards the end of January 2016 to honour The Notorious after his spectacular 13-second KO victory over Jose Aldo on Saturday night. In a statement released by Dublin City Council today, Lord Mayor of Dublin Críona Ní Dhálaigh said: “I am delighted to honour Conor McGregor, World Champion, in his home city of Dublin and acknowledge his wonderful achievement in the sport of UFC. “He became World Champion in such stunning style and was watched by many Irish people in the early hours of last Saturday morning. “Comhghairdeas le Conor ar an éacht íontach seo. Curadh reatha an Domhain ó mBaile Átha Cliath is ea é.” The statement continued: “It was important for us to contact Conor and his management team before making any public or media announcements and to make sure that he would welcome the reception and also ascertain his availability. “We have held discussions with his team and are delighted to now be in a position to make this announcement. We will hold the reception in City Hall towards the end of January 2016 and further details will be announced as planning progresses.” Well deserved.
