US Youngster Edu Has To Prove Himself At Rangers

Still new to European football, the young American admits that he has to prove himself in training before he is to get the playing time he hopes for.

Since his move from Toronto FC to Scottish powerhouse Rangers last month, American midfielder Maurice Edu has experienced the celebrity thrill of being on the books at a top European club and suffered some withering criticism for his brash self-proclamations. But the 22-year-old now seems to have settled in and is hoping to make an impact soon.

“I still have a long way to go in my career,” he told Setanta Sports on Friday. “I’m still a young kid and I’ve only been playing football for a year and a half now. So I’ve got a long way to go to get to where I want to be.”

Where he wants to be is on the field. He has yet to see any playing time for his new club, and was left out of the lineup for the US’s 3-0 victory against Trinidad & Tobago on Wednesday. However, he started in the Americans’ 1-0 win over Cuba last weekend. It was a tough match under adverse conditions, but playing alongside Michael Bradley, Edu did well. He is convinced his talents will be useful to a Rangers side that is already stacked with midfield talent, such as Pedro Mendes and Steve Davis.

"I am able to help at both ends with the ball," the U.S. Olympic team star said. "Making tackles and breaking up play, being the guy to distribute the ball or going forward being able to score goals and create plays and help out with the attack."

No matter what he thinks his skills are, the 2007 MLS Rookie of the Year realizes that he must prove himself at Ibrox and, more important, at Murray Park, the Rangers training facility, if his $5 million-plus transfer is going to be deemed a success.

“I want to impact on the team,” he said. “I want to be as good as I can be here, and I think it starts on the training pitch, doing well there and showing I am ready to play."
