    USA Romps over Overmatched Barbados

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>USA 8 - 0 Barbados
It took all of 55 seconds for the United States to break out of its scoreless slump. Fifty-five seconds, and the three straight blanks in recent friendlies were forgotten.

And after Clint Dempsey’s opener, the rout was on, as the U.S. crushed little Barbados 8-0 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The scoreline was the largest ever margin of victory for the U.S. in World Cup qualifying, while Dempsey’s first goal was the fastest in the team’s WCQ history.

Heavy underdogs, Barbados tried to bolster their ranks recently by publishing a plea to any Barbadians around the world who might qualify to play for the national team. They entered the game ranked 121 by FIFA, having beaten Domenica in the preliminary rounds.

But any new players wouldn’t have helped on Sunday afternoon. The Yanks outshot their CONCACAF foes 22-2, including a 14-0 disparity in shots on goal. The first of all those American shots fell to Dempsey, who made no mistake before even a minute had been played. Carlos Bocanegra’s diagonal pass from the left side cleared the defender’s head by inches, and Dempsey was able to chest it down and hit a sliding shot past goalkeeper Alvin Rouse.

Just 11 minutes later, the lead was doubled when Michael Bradley gave his dad, U.S. head coach Bob Bradley, a fitting Father’s Day present. Brian Ching had the initial shot, which was blocked by Rouse. Bradley, trailing the play, slammed a left footed shot past two sprawling Barbadian defenders and into the net.

Ching, starting in place of benched striker Eddie Johnson -- who was totally ineffective in recent action -- was a massive presence for the U.S. all afternoon. The Houston Dynamo forward played mainly as a target man, but ended up getting on the score sheet twice, too. His first came in the 20th minute. Landon Donovan controlled the ball on the left side and squared a pass to Pablo Mastroeni just outside the area. The Colorado Rapids star one-timed a shot that deflected off Ching and inside the left-hand post. It wasn’t Ching’s best goal ever, but it counted nonetheless.

After the break, the U.S. continued the onslaught. Donovan bent a freekick past Rouse in the 59th minute. Dempsey got a second one in the 63rd after some more good work by Ching, who’s shot was parried right into Dempsey’s path. Eddie Johnson, who replaced Donovan in the 81st minute, scored on a header a minute after his insertion. It was his 8th goal in eight World Cup qualifiers.

An own goal forced by Ching’s brave run to the near post in the 86th, and a second by Ching himself completed the thrashing.

The series now shifts to Bridgetown, where Barbadian coach Eyre Sealy will look to just save face. The second leg is to be played on June 22 at the Barbados National Stadium.

    Lineups:
    USA: 18-Brad Guzan; 6-Steve Cherundolo, 5-Oguchi Onyewu, 3-Carlos Bocanegra, 15-Heath Pearce; 10-Landon Donovan (9-Eddie Jonson, 81), 12-Michael Bradley, 4-Pablo Mastroeni (16-Freddy Adu, 26), 17-DaMarcus Beasley; 11-Brian Ching, 8-Clint Dempsey (7-Eddie Lewis, 72)

    BRB: 1-Alvin Rouse; 2-Dyson James, 3-Daryl Ferguson, 4-Greg Belle, 5-Bryan Neblett; 8-Jonathan Forte (13-Riviere Williams, 69), 10-Norman Forde (Capt.) (12-Malcolm Marshall, 72), 11-Jonathon Nurse (17-John Parris, 76), 15-Rommelle Burgess; 7-Paul Ifill, 9-Mark McCammon.</div>

WTF is CONCACAF. I always played in it as Canada in FIFA 06 and 07, but I never knew what it was.

Confederation Of North, Central American and Carribbean Association Football.

By comparison, Mexico got placed against a weaker opponent and only won 2-0. Mexico v. US is the only match that really matters in CONCACAF.

Wow, I was expecting a larger margin to be honest. lol

As for Honduras, they have a good chance of making it to the World Cup. However, they'll have to get through Canada and Mexico to do so. That'll be difficult. In any case, let's just say if Mexico finish first and Honduras manage to get second, they'd still have an opportunity to make it to the finals of WC 2010. Deal is though, they'd likely be destroyed (putting it nicely) by the fifth ranked CONMEBOL team.

The way I figure CONMEBOL turning out right now is ..

    01 Argentina
    02 Paraguay
    03 Brazil
    04 Colombia
    05 Uruguay
    06 Chile
    07 Ecuador
    08 Venezuela
    09 Peru
    10 Bolivia

Hondruas' opponent, if they finished second in their group, would be Uruguay. The two-time WC champions who are currently (finally!) regaining their strength. But to anyone, don't look down on Honduras,. They are actually 37th ranked in the World and do indeed have a chance to finish first in their group to avoid the CONMEBOL confrontation.

I agree. Most people don't even realize that Argentina isn't entirely made up of superstars. They are the best team assembled in football today. No team works together as well as the Argentines in my opinion. Portugal is indeed a pleasure to watch as well though, I agree. However, I think Scolari's decision to leave the team that is so in touch with him, like a father figure, even to the fans in Portugal, is hurting morale at the moment. They will have a difficult time with the Germans, but they can make it through because they have the talent to do so. It will be a tough match for both sides and a pleasure to watch.

For some reason Mexico always seems to lose to Argentina, I pretty much hate them already but they always beat us. Especially last year when we had the lead and we still lost to them 2-1. But the good thing is Mexico has a nice core of young guys like Vela, Do Santos, Guardado and Ochoa who seem to be developing nicely.
