Not sure who has been following the situation with the US second division (formerly USL), but it has been resolved. For a quick update, there were a group of clubs from the USL who broke away and formed their own group taking the name NASL for their new league. However, the remaining USL launched a series of lawsuits to try to bring the two leagues back as one. The situation got cloudier last week as the USSF rejected the applications of both NASL and USL for second division status. The two leagues were then given a week to resolve the problem and make one league. Then the rumors came in that if this mess wasn't resolved, FIFA could step in and remove the US from the World Cup. We can all rest a bit easier now as the USSF created a second division in a similar format to the MLS, where there are two conferences and a playoff to crown a champion. Here are the divisions (and more courtesy of Ives): USL: Austin, Minnesota, Portland, Puerto Rico, Rochester, Tampa Bay NASL: Baltimore, Carolina, Miami, Montreal, St. Louis, Vancouver Sunil Gulati, Director of the USSF, added that there will be more announcements coming regarding guidelines for second and third division soccer in the US.
