"Not a whole lot to share with you. It was just the thing to do and he understood.
"I'm not sure what he's going to do. He's looking for another school. We're going to help him in that process when we can."
Holland is the second player to leave the Trojans in recent days, joining tailback Emmanuel Moody, the team's second-leading rusher as a freshman last season. Moody, one of several tailbacks competing for playing time this fall, decided to transfer.
On Monday, a person close to the situation told ESPN's Joe Schad that Moody has narrowed his choices to Oklahoma State, Florida, Texas and North Carolina. Moody said he made a "business decision" and wanted a chance to be a featured back.
Holland caught 56 passes for 1,188 yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior at Taft High two years ago. He sat out last season after breaking his collarbone in fall camp and undergoing surgery.
He also ran track at Taft and was the state 100- and 200-meter champion in 2005. He finished second in the 100 in 2006. He also competed as a freshman for the USC track team last year.
