The rapper-turned-home renovator swaps his celebrity for total simplicity in “Vanilla Ice Goes Amish,” a new DIY Network series that has the pierced and tattooed ’90s star trying to survive without mirrors, zippers or electricity in the ultra-religious Ohio countryside. “All of it freaked me out,” says Rob Van Winkle, 45, who spent two months in an Amish paradise for the show, which premieres Saturday at 10 p.m. “I’m out of my environment in this place, and sleeping in this crazy, strange squeaky bed hearing roosters,” he says. “How do I live without modern luxuries?” Watching the Miami-born emcee fumble to sew a button, or nick himself while shaving by candlelight, is a guilty pleasure on par with jamming to his hit 1990 single “Ice, Ice, Baby” — which bluegrass band Old Man Whickutt covers acoustically as the series’ theme song, of course.
