Well, I wouldnt say for life just yet, but I think Goddell is heading down that road.

The NFL suspended him without pay, so when ATL releases Vick.. where does the guaranteed bonus money that Vick was owed go to? The NFL?

the Falcons will be able to withhold future earnings and they can pursue some of the past payments....its unclear how much of it they can go after though, but their team of high priced lawyers will know....considering how upset Arthur Blank is with Vick, I would be surpised if he seeks every dime he could get back
The punishment does not make sense. It's all about protecting perceptions. The guy killed a few animals and gambled on it. He didn't kill your dog, and didn't kill my dog. Dogs are domesticated animals, and animals are property. He did what he wanted to with his property, away from the public eye, to be uncovered later and exposed to the world like dirty laundry. Killing those dogs didn't upset the balance of nature, cause ecological disruptions, or destroy animal habitats. It really doesn't matter whether he killed his animals for fun, for profit, or for food, because they are his to do with what he wants. We live in a society where the same people who love animals, also eat them and beat them. I love the taste of veal, baby cows. Their lives are cut short at a young age so that I may feast upon their tasty meat, even though there are plenty of adult varieties for me to choose from.

the penalty makes perfect sense becuase the league doesnt know how long hes going to prison....indefinite suspesions are good, because it give the league a chance to remove him, but give him a shot to get back in if he turns this around....a little know fact: 1 year drug suspensions in the NFL are actually indefinite suspensions with a minimum of one year, you have to apply for reinstatment, its not automatic....once hes dealt with his legal troubles, he can apply for reinstatement and the Goodell will make a decsion at that time....but its not a lifetime ban

Pete Rose was betting on the very sport that he was participating in. Vick's gambling was completely unrelated, which is why I think the NFL's stance is questionable.
Aside from my opinions about gambling, does the league really need to worry about suspending this guy? If he is going to be locked up for a while, they aren't going to see him on the field anyway as it is physically impossible for him to practice or play while locked in a cage. I think that any suspension on this should be coming from the team he works for, not the league. Arthur Blank is paying his salary, not Goodell.
