College scout Paul Roell, who spent 15 years with the Indianapolis Colts in the same capacity, was hired to replace John Fitzpatrick, whose contract was not renewed.Even with the retention of most of the scouts, however, the Minnesota personnel department has undergone a restructuring.Last week, the club hired former Miami Dolphins general manager Rick Spielman, who was most recently an NFL analyst for ESPN.com, as vice president of player personnel. Spielman replaced Fran Foley, who was dismissed after only three months on the job, in part because of alleged inaccuracies on his resume. Foley is taking his case to arbitration, seeking to be paid in full for his three-year, $1.2 million contract.In a key move, the Vikings last month signed highly regarded director of college scouting Scott Studwell to a three-year contract extension.Spielman will oversee the entire personnel department.Veteran scouts Paul Wiggin and Jeff Robinson are now listed as pro scouts. Robinson had formerly been the director of pro scouting. Wiggin, who has reduced his workload in recent years, was senior consultant for pro personnel.Frank Avevedo and Ryan Monnens are returning as pro scouts. Forty-year veteran Jerry Reichow remains as a national scout, but is considering retirement.
