<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Vikings put Greenway on IR, sign LB GlennBy Len PasquarelliESPN.comMoving to bolster their linebacker corps after the loss of first-round draft choice Chad Greenway to a season-ending knee injury, the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday signed unrestricted free agent Jason Glenn to a contract. The Vikings officially placed Greenway on injured reserve Thursday, ending his season. The former Iowa standout injured his left knee in the preseason opener Monday night. Minnesota officials have not identified the injury, but it's believed Greenway tore his anterior cruciate ligament.Minnesota also waived rookie punter John Torp, an undrafted college free agent.A five-year veteran, Glenn appeared in all 16 games with the Miami Dolphins in 2005, after spending the first four seasons of his career with the New York Jets. The former Texas A&M star did not record a tackle from scrimmage last season but had 13 special teams tackles, third-most for the Dolphins in 2005.Contract details were not immediately available, but it is likely that Glenn signed a one-year deal for the veteran minimum salary.Glenn, 26, is an excellent athlete with good movement skills, a dependable defender who has played both outside linebackers spots during his career. Glenn has excelled on special teams coverage units, with over 50 career tackles in the kicking game, and that is where he is most likely to contribute for the Vikings.A sixth-round pick of the Detroit Lions in the 2001 draft, Glenn was released as a rookie and claimed on waivers by the Jets that year. He has appeared in 71 games, with one start, and has 94 tackles, five passes defensed and one fumble recovery in his playing time from scrimmage. He is likely to back up fourth-year veteran E.J. Henderson, the starting weakside linebacker who had staved off the competition from Greenway early in camp, in the Vikings' revamped defense.Len Pasquarelli is a senior NFL writer for ESPN.com.
