    Questions for you.

I'm a big fan of you, your posts, and your taste in music.

Because of you I got into the RHCP about 2 months ago, I'm addicted. I can't take them off my iPod playlist. I just bought the live DVD, it's incredible.

    Just a few questions...

    1) Your top 10 guitarists?

    2) Do you think Frusciante looks like Jesus? That's besides the point, what are some good songs by him?

    3) Your top 10 CURRENT bands?

    4) Top 10 RHCP songs?

    5) Top 10 guitar rifts?

The whole world must know, that's why. Everyone loves Voodoo Child. Including me.

By the way, since most of the questions are RHCP related, can anyone recommend any bands with a similar sound to them?

Because Voodoo's a pretty popular character on the site, that's why I don't PM him.

I'm sure I'm not the only person on here that are interested in his answers.

Thanks a lot for the compliments bro'. I'm sorry for not responding to that PM you sent me a few days ago, but I've been pretty busy preparing to go to U of M for the semester, so I haven't been able to get on JBB for more than a few minutes at a time.

    1) Hmm... this really has nothing to do with skill, because some of the most talented guitar players out there I find unlistenable, but here are ten I listen to the most (can't really list them in order of how I like them tbh) -

    Syd Barrett (Pink Floyd)
    Robert Fripp (King Crimson)
    John Frusciante (RHCP/Ataxia/Solo)
    George Harrison (The Beatles)
Jimi Hendrix (a.k.a. the greatest to ever live)
    Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
    Alvin Lee (Ten Years After)
    Francis Rossi (Status Quo)
    Steve Vai (Solo)
Jack White (The Raconteurs/The White Stripes) - A bit overrated as far as talent goes, but I like his stuff.

    2) Yes, eerily. And some good songs are -

"Second Walk" - I think you'll probably like this song if you like the Chilis. It's the song of his that sounds the most like them.

"This Cold" - Another song that sounds similar to something he'd do with the Peppers.

"Away and Anywhere" - Probably my personal favorite of his, but not a very 'radio friendly' song.

"Going Inside" - The intro makes the song really. This was his first single as a solo artist.

"Poppy Man" - Instrumental only, but a great song that'll get stuck in your head easily.

"In Relief" - Most people just getting into him can't stand this sort of material, including myself when I first got into him, but even if you don't like the song as a whole, the intro is pretty cool.

Just a warning about Frusciante... I wouldn't go out and buy one of his albums just because he's in the Peppers. I made that mistake when I was first getting into them, and he really sounds nothing like them whatsoever. He also has a bunch of albums from the period where he had quit the band and was addicted to heroin that are almost unlistenable, even for fans of his stuff. He doesn't really have one single, great solo album that'll probably appeal to an RHCP fan, but he does have a lot of individual tracks that are pretty solid.

    3) 'CURRENT' meaning bands still around? Wow, this is a tough one, because the music industry is such **** these days, but off the top of my head -

    10 - Kings of Leon
    9 - The Redwalls
    8 - West Indian Girl
    7 - Wolfmother
    6 - The Raconteurs/The White Stripes
    5 - The Strokes
    4 - John Frusciante/Ataxia
    3 - Pearl Jam
    2 - Incubus
1 - Red Hot Chili Peppers

I'm not a huge fan of any of them in particular except for the top four, but they've all got songs on my playlist right now.

    4) This list changes almost monthly because they've got so much material out there (in fact, just a few months ago "Around the World" was my favorite), but here's what it'd have to be at the moment.

10 - "Rivers of Avalon"/"Quixoticelixer" - I list these together even though they're two separate tracks because they're both tracks that no one has ever heard of because they were never released on albums, which is a damn shame, because they're two of the greatest songs I've heard from RHCP.
9 - "Pretty Little Ditty" - An instrumental track... part of which was ripped off by Crazytown to make "Butterfly". The song's bass line sounds simple, but it was one of the first ones I learned (probably why I like the song so much), and it's actually one of Flea's most challenging.
8 - "Midnight" - This used to be my favorite song, but I think I just overplayed it. It's still got a special place with me though... "Over the laws of light, Over the moon by midnight"...
7 - "Breaking The Girl" - I think what really draws me to this track are all of the unusual instruments they use on the track, especially the percussion instruments, which Chad Smith took mostly from a junkyard. It just combines a lot of sounds you wouldn't expect to hear in a Chili Peppers song (at least an early Chili Peppers song).
6 - "American Ghost Dance" - The oldest song of theirs I have on this list, but it gives you a great feel in general of what their old funk-rock style used to be like... very, very funky track done with George Clinton as producer.
5 - "Nobody Weird Like Me" - One of the best older tracks, just full of energy. It has a great outro too.
4 - "Stone Cold Bush" - A real departure from the recent stuff, but as far as their classic material (a.k.a. their harder/funkier stuff) goes, this is my favorite at the moment.
3 - "Scar Tissue - Another song that's been played a million times but is brilliant none the less.
2 - "This Is The Place" - I know a lot of people who say this is the worst song on By The Way, but from the first time I listened to the album until the present, this has always been the standout track to me... especially the background vocals on the track.
1 - "Californication" - Everyone knows this song, and it's been played on the radio a million times, but it's still possibly the greatest song I've ever heard... just brilliant on all levels.

    5) I'm listing these in order of my personal tastes, not really how hard or complex they are -

    10) Black Sabbath - "Iron Man"
    9) Metallica - "Enter Sandman"
    8) Guns N' Roses - "Sweet Child O' Mine"
    7) John Frusciante - "Going Inside"
    6) Smashing Pumpkins - "Today"
    5) Jimi Hendrix - "Purple Haze"
    4) Black Sabbath - "Paranoid"
    3) Jimi Hendrix - "Fire"
    2) Derek and the Dominoes - "Layla"
    1) Jimi Hendrix - "Voodoo Chile"

    <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Why don't you just PM him?</div>

To be fair, he did, but I never got back to him because I've been really busy lately.

BTW, Matt, Live In Hyde Park is okay... probably not worth buying though... just d/l'ing. I ordered it just because RHCP hadn't put anything new out in a long time when it was released, but I think Live at Slane Castle is better... it has more soul, and there's no video to go along with Hyde Park either.

    Clever.

Oh yeah, and I said those were my favorites, not the ones who I think are the 'best'.

Alright, thank you. Haha, I just look at him, and I think Jesus. When he plays (I got the live DVD), he reminds me of Jesus (when Jesus is depicted carrying his cross.) It's creepy.

Now I'm a huge Staind fan, I find the guys voice incredible. I saw them live, and there was no difference between the tracks and live. The lyrics are pretty good for the most part, too. If I recall correctly, you weren't a big fan. I never inquired why, so now I will.

Yeah I ended up finding a working downloadable copy of Hyde Park. I also picked up Slane Castle yesterday after I got out of class. I watched it. It was pretty damn amazing. Frusciante is the closest thing to Jesus on this planet, I swear.

Haha, I don't know why I can't keep a name for the site. It's weird. I had Kobe 8 Ball/K8B for a long time. And I plan on having this for a long time.

I don't think they're bad at all. In fact, I like a lot of their tracks, and I'd definitely consider them above all the **** that is out there in the mainstream today. I'm just not a huge fan of their overall sound though... no reason in particular for why I'm not... just never grew on me I guess...

Now that Stadium Arcadium's been out for awhile, you've been able to listen to it a lot (I'm guessing). How would you rank the tracks now and how would you rank it among the other RHCP cds?

    <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">No Keith Richards?</div>

I actually can't stand the Stones, which is odd, because most other bands considered to be in their 'genre' are favorites of mine... maybe it's because my dad has been a huge Stones fan since he saw them in college in the early 60's and so he's been trying to force them on me since I was a kid...

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Now that Stadium Arcadium's been out for awhile, you've been able to listen to it a lot (I'm guessing). How would you rank the tracks now and how would you rank it among the other RHCP cds?</div>

Overall, I'm really unimpressed by Stadium Arcadium. I like it better than the best albums of most bands, but as far as the Chilis go, so far it really hasn't clicked with me and I'd have to rate it as one of the worst, probably in an order that looks something like this -

1 - Mother's Milk (I'm just as big of a fan of their earlier funk-rock style.)
    2 - By The Way
    3 - Californication
4 - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
5 - Uplift Mofo Party Plan
    6 - Stadium Arcadium
    7 - Freaky Styley
    8 - One Hot Minute
9 - Red Hot Chili Peppers

It's really a whole nother brand of music though. None of their first three albums (RHCP, FS, UMPP) sound like their first two albums with Frusciante (MM and BSSM), and neither of those sound anything like OHM, and they all sound dramatically different from Cali, BTW, and Stadium.

And here's how I'd rate the tracks now -

    1T - Death Of A Martian
    1T - She's Only 18
3 - Warlocks - I know, most people look at it as a filler track, and for the first month or so I had the album, I'd skip over it, but for some reason the chorus has really grown on me... can't explain it. [IMG]
    4 - Hey
    5 - Wet Sand
6 - Make You Feel Better
    7 - If
    8 - Stadium Arcadium
    9 - Turn It Again
10 - Torture Me - Same explanation as "Warlocks"
    11 - We Believe
    12 - Snow (Hey Oh)
    13 - 21st Century
    14 - Readymade
    15 - Desecration Smile
    16 - Especially In Michigan
    17 - Dani California
    18 - Charlie
    19 - C'mon Girl
    20 - Strip My Mind
    21 - Hump de Bump
    22 - Animal Bar
    23 - Slow Cheetah
    24 - So Much I
25 - She Looks To Me
    26 - Storm In A Teacup
    27 - Hard To Concentrate
    28 - Tell Me Baby

Really interested to see how you'd rate them in comparison...

    <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Good call on Wolfmother VC [IMG]</div>

Their sound eerily like Black Sabbath to me. I like their style, and hopefully they don't get caught up in the comparisons and don't start trying to mimic Sabbath/Zepplin.

You'll probably be going through the application process in Oct.-Dec. of your senior year. I didn't start working on my application until about late September.

The only thing you should be focussing on as a junior is getting your grades up, beefing up your extracurricular resume, and maybe taking the ACT and/or SAT (late in your junior year, like March, April, or May... or even early on in your senior year).

^ I've been told Universities actually only look at your senior marks, most specifically Grade 12 marks for consideration, as well as just focus on Grade 12 activities. True? Or is that just something people who surprisingly got into University when they had just average marks in earlier grades say?

Well, almost every single university (in America) has you apply before your senior year is over with. For early decision or early action, you usually apply a few months into your senior year, before your first semester of grades are out, and for regular decision, you apply after your first semester.

Colleges will look at what courses your taking your senior year and what extracurriculars you're involved in, but other than that, the actual grades you make in your senior year (especially second semester) don't really have any bearing on your college of choice's admission decision, unless you are wait-listed, which is a whole nother story entirely.

However, keep in mind, colleges can always decide they don't want you anymore if they see that you just started slacking off your senior year and started failing all your courses, but that only happens in extreme scenarios when applicants completely blow off their senior year.

So basically, you can really slack off your senior year (in American HS's), because it's not that important, but don't completely blow school off. They're not going to decline a student from going from all A's to a mix of B's, C's, and D's, yet they would if they went from all A's to all F's.

I personally tried really hard my first three or four weeks of senior year, just so in the worst-case scenario, I had sort of a safety net of good grades to fall back on, and then for the rest of the year I more or less half-assed my school work. I know that sounds lazy as hell, but really, it wound up giving me way more time than usual to work on my body and my game (which helped me get to the point where I was being considered for preferred walk-on status at DI schools), and none of the colleges I applied to (Ivy League included) seemed to care.

Maybe the admissions process was different when your older cousin was in high school, but nowadays, it's something you do in your senior year.

According to Rutger's official website, their application deadline this year is December 1, 2006 of the applicant's senior year.

They don't have a deadline for your class yet, but it will most likely be around December 1, 2007, so you've got a lot of time between now and the time you apply.
