<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">For Gerald Wallace, this amounted to a fear of flying.

Not the kind where you need Valium to strap yourself into an airplane. Rather, this was a reluctance to do what Wallace always has done on a basketball court: soar to the rim with a daring that earned him the nickname "Crash.''

"Crash'' crashed on opening night for the Charlotte Bobcats. He was blindsided by Indiana Pacers forward Danny Granger as he swooped in for a dunk. Granger's cheap shot (he was charged with a flagrant foul) left Wallace injured and leery.

"I've never played with any regard for my body,'' Wallace said Monday. "I've never had that fear of hurting my body.''

That changed a bit when Granger took out Wallace's legs in mid-flight. Suddenly he was in free fall with no equilibrium.

"Not knowing where I'd land and not knowing how I'd land,'' Wallace recalled.

He landed on the back of his head, which meant a severe headache and a stiff neck. He managed to practice the next day, but by Wallace's admission, he wasn't the same player after the incident.

The numbers say plenty: Last season, Wallace averaged 15.2 points and shot 54 percent from the field. This season, he averages 11.4 points and shoots 43 percent.</div>

Well that could also be in part to Emeka and May returning, as well as Adam Morrison being another for the offensive scheme.
