"Charles Wang has always been a man with a plan. It just happens that since he bought the Islanders 10 years ago, that plan has hardly gotten off the ground.

So after years of contemplating moving the franchise because a construction project for a new stadium complex has not been approved, Wang said yesterday the Islanders would stay put for the time being.

"We're going to be here until 2015," Wang said at the team's media day. "We're going to pursue every option, but we're here. 2015 is the date when our lease is up."

Wang's goal has been the same since he has been involved with the team. He wants to build a massive complex where Nassau Coliseum now stands -- including a new arena for the Islanders and a small village of residential and commercial properties -- but the Town of Hempstead has shot it down on more than one occasion.

Town supervisor Kate Murray has proposed a scaled-down version of the plan, but Wang said he doesn't think "it's economically viable."

The Coliseum, which opened in 1972, is outdated, and Islanders general manager Garth Snow openly admitted it affected his search for free agents this offseason."
