<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">OAKLAND - Chris Mullin, the Warriors executive vice president of basketball operations, was back at practice Tuesday, working out and shooting with his team. After weeks away in Europe scouting, Mullin returns with several big decisions waiting for him. The looming Feb. 24 trade deadline offers one of the Warriors' last opportunities to make significant changes to roster that has not panned out thus far. "You're always looking for upgrades no matter where you are," Mullin said after practice. "I thought we had good talent (coming into the year). We have to figure out what fits." Probably heading the agenda is getting something for forward Clifford Robinson and center Dale Davis, who combined represent more than $15 million in salary cap space. Robinson is in the final year of a deal that's paying him more than $5 million this season. Davis is earning around $10 million this season before becoming a free agent. Any team that has them at the end of the season will have their contracts come off the books. The Warriors can't profit from the salary cap relief because they already are over the cap for next year. </div> Source
Good article. I think the Warriors should go after someone like Redd or Ray Allen. WE could move them into SF and move Dunleavy in the trade
i feel bad for the Warriors and their fans, they have some very loyal fans, they deserve a better product. J-Rich and T-Murph are a good start, but the rest of them arent that good
What hurts even more is the future financial flexibility of the team. There's no room to make trades because the players we have that are signed to long-term contracts have disproportionate dollars to their level of talent and impact. With the rules of the CBA changing, it could be even worse. Adonal 2 years from now, nobody would be jumping up and down about him. And Fisher? If his fg% gets any worse as he ages, we couldn't even give him away. There's no upside in these players. We'd be better off with a star player worth those two combined or just short term contracts like the Calbert Cheaney signing. Let's see how these guys fit in before we start locking these dudes up or pay for proven impact players that can help us set the tone.
In theory the cap ought to work for a team that has no all-stars,has nobody among the top scorers,no franchise 7 footer and last saw the playoffs when most of the roster were 5th graders. Somehow the Spurs,Nets,Lakers,Mavs,Kings,Pistons,Rockets can all make trades, reel in free agents and the Warriors can only give away their best players for guys like Evan Eschmeyer and Christian Laetner and Popeye Jones who play,as a lot abot 5 total minutes as warriors. I assume the idea is to keep Robinson-Davis-Cheaney until their deals run out. Rather than overpay bidding for a second tier free agent such as Fisher-Go with draft picks and Whoever can be had from among CBA guys, castoffs, minimum salary free agents etc. When the Warriors do get cap room they will be at the advantage at trade talks,or free agent dealings. A deal tha gives Dunleavy and Fisher for a role player and a mid-first round pick could be a plus, the problem then being that hardly anyone has cap room in-season,so such a deal might need to be done later
One of the reasons we can't even use our cap money to sign good free agents is because we don't have any franchise players to magnet in the good guys and we have no team identity. We've never had a team. It was always incompatable one on one players and no single player to build a team around. Even Murphy is showing at times why he is a bad fit for the Warriors defensive/offensive schemes, he doesn't move his feet, doesn't set good picks, doesn't use footwork or pumpfakes and he doesn't get out of the darn way when the team's trying to drive. Unless we find an rebounding, shotblocking, impact center to stand next to Murphy we're going to get crushed inside. Let's hope that is Biedrens, even though he looks like a power forward.
^Well if Biedrins is all the hype, then he should be the guy inside helping Murphy. If we could have the offensive scheme of get the ball to JR or Biedrins, then if they can't score, throw it out to Murph and he hits the jumper or sends it back to J-Rich or Old Man (Biedrins look at his face. You'll see what I mean) and they shoot or drive since they are open. We've yet to have a good offensive scheme this year that can get us to the zone and if we play Biedrins, then maybe we can start doing that because Foyle or Cliff don't demand that kind of defesive attention that Dmap got every night last year
I don't think Stonehands Damp ever commanded attention in the post, but he was a good garbage player on offense. He slammed home the putbacks on an offensive rebound because we missed a lot of shots off the rim and when he actually did catch a pass underneath the basket he got fouled or dunked it. He made games exciting and he wasn't stupid like Murphy when it came to pump-faking first before going up in traffic. Murphy always gets stripped because he ain't fooling anyone. BTW Nick Van Exel made Dampier better because he moved in a way which drew big men out. He had a knack for finding the open man and had really good vision of the floor. We need that type of point guard again, the one who can toss oops with pinpoint accuracy and shoot from the outside so that defenders won't zone up on him. If we had Nick in his prime without the attitude, we would be a decent team. Games would be exciting to watch again.
Damp just had a nice game for Dallas-7 blocks and over 20 boards. I like Najara, who is pretty much like Cardinal, but whatever Damp's limitations,he was a tough guy able to give us D and boards. We can hope Biedrens someday has a 7 block-20 rebound game, but I'd feel good to just see half that. When the dust settled, for Damp,Jamison,Arenas,Marc Jackson,Boykins and Cardinal we got Najara and the short-term use of Davis and Robinson...including their big salaries
