GM Otis Smith is trying to construct a team around Dwight Howard that will win a title -- and hold up for a long run. It's why he isn't terribly interested in acquiring a veteran star, such as New Jersey point guard Jason Kidd, for example.

He said it isn't because Magic ownership wouldn't agree to pay another big salary and venture into the punitive luxury tax. "They'd do that, for the right guy," he said.

But Smith is wary of a "quick-fix" approach and its long-term effects on his core group -- on the floor and in the locker room. "Stacking players on top of each other doesn't always work," he said, alluding to the chemical combustion of egos. "It has to be the right fit." -- Orlando Sentinel</div>
