Ha! Actually Horse racing had drug testing back then. Quite a different metabolism than humans. Performance enhancing drugs are more commonly stimulants, tranquilizers (yep) brochial dilators, blood thinners. Things like EPO and growth hormones could be an issue, however roids are considered therapuetic, not PED. Besides, these are young colts....they are naturally saturated steroids. Only time horses are given steroids typically during injuries that limit performance level motions. Our older horse started getting monthly testosterone shots when he turned 30, greatly improved his quality of life.
As Classic as it gets...... and Still a Track Record 1:59:40, still the fastest finish. Only once since or prior has any Horse ran the Derby in less than a 2:00 finish: 1:59.97 in 001 Monarchos.....still not as fast as the Legendary Secretariat...!
