"He's playing like he's 21 now," Webber said after yesterday's 94-93 loss to the Indiana Pacers. "I think [USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo] is in a tough position. But how can you have guys out there that have never won a playoff series, and they're going to try to win a playoff against the world. I think we need to get back to just basketball."
Iverson was left off the list of 21 NBA and two college invitees officially announced yesterday.
"There are a lot of guys I think should have been invited," Webber said, "but with all the great talent in the NBA you really can't take it personal and get mad [if you're left off]. You have to know there's a bigger goal. As long as U.S. basketball stays on top, that's my biggest thing because I don't think the world has caught up yet."
Never mind that the U.S. settled for a bronze medal in the 2004 Olympics, Webber said, "I think you could take an Oakley [retired forward Charles Oakley] in shape, Karl Malone in shape, [John] Stockton in shape and they can beat the world right now because those guys know their roles."
"I think we in the USA need to remember that," Webber said. "It's not about names and young talent. You can pump-fake a young, athletic person any day. Believe me, it's easy once you've learned the game, and you know what somebody's tendencies are."
