Re: WEC 38: Varner vs. Cerrone Notes on the Event: -- Undefeated lightweight Donald Cerrone, one of Greg Jackson's students, earned his title shot with a thrilling unanimous decision victory over former champion Rob MacCullough. Eight of Cerrone's nine wins have been by submission. Jamie Varner has one loss in his last seventeen bouts and all of his wins during that span are by stoppage. Varner hasn't gone to a decision since 2003. The champ trains with Arizona Combat Sports. -- Former WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber faces former UFC Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver in a rematch of their classic five-round title fight from 2008. The Fairtex fighter lost his title to Mike Thomas Brown in November. Brown had Faber hurt from strikes when Faber attempted a high-risk spinning back elbow. Brown caught him with a short punch and dropped him, finishing him off on the ground to force the referee to stop the bout less than three minutes into the first round. Pulver is also coming off a loss having been brutally knocked out by Leonard Garcia that same night. Garcia and Brown are expected to fight at the next WEC event for the Featherweight Title. -- Rising featherweight fighter Jose Aldo, a member of Nova Uniao, could put himself in line for title contention with another convincing victory at WEC 38. Aldo comes from the same camp as Vitor 'Shaolin' Ribeiro and Wagnney Fabiano. His opponent, Fredson Paixao, is a Gracie Barra fighter making his WEC debut. The Rio native trains with Renato 'Babalu' Sobral and Gustavo Machado.
MMA saturation levels are high this month. WEC 38 goes off tomorrow (Sunday) night live on Versus at 9:30PM EST. Canadian fans can watch on TSN. The WEC lightweight (155-lbs) title is on the line!
This is awesome. I have this the Laker game and this to watch tomorrow, UFC 94 next Saturday, and the Super Bowl next Sunday. Fuckin' awesome.
He's 4" taller but there must be a camera angle or a pair of shoes or something adding to the disparity.
Two fights in and once again WEC is delivering big time. Man, I can't believe I paid $55 for Affliction but I'm getting this one free. It's opposite day or something.
