Its been reported that Monty is out and Nellie is back in.

Sources: Nelson to return to Warriors as coach
    By Marc Stein
    ESPN.com

Don Nelson will be named as the new coach of the Golden State Warriors this week after the Warriors agreed to terms on a buyout with Mike Montgomery.

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that things are "all lined up" for Nelson, 66, to return to the Warriors, who haven't been to the playoffs since 1994 when Nelson was still their coach.

Montgomery had two seasons left on his contract worth an estimated $5 million.

Before joining Golden State, Montgomery, 59, spent 18 years at Stanford, where he led the Cardinal to 16 postseason appearances and a trip to the '98 Final Four.

"I'm very appreciative of the opportunity that I was presented two years ago," Montgomery said in a statement released by the team. "This was a new challenge that I was eager to embrace and glad that I had the chance to pursue and experience. I'd like to thank the Warriors' organization for their support, professionalism and class, and I'd also like to thank the fans of the Bay Area. This is a tremendous region for basketball and the support that they have provided me over the years has been simply outstanding."

Senior writer Marc Stein covers the NBA for ESPN.com.

I said all along I blamed the players, not Monty. Plus Mully gets some blame because he did not get Monty players to play for Monty.

Nellie, that's exciting but this will not end well because historically you just cannot go back to an old girlfriend.

The man can coach, that's for sure...and he's proven that he adapts his system to fit his talent, which is something monty didn't seem to have a clue about.

    AWESOME!

Wait till the Custodian hears about this! He should be thrilled [IMG]

Mullin couldn't get a big offseason trade as he promised, so he brought in a new coach. But whatever, I'm happy.

Haven't posted in a long long long time but I think I'm ready to start it up again!!!!

Nice move on the Front Office's part. Giving Monty a chance to coach college again and bringing back a coaching legend. He stated earlier this year from his home in Maui that he was fully enjoying retirement and that he would never come back the W's because of the lawsuit that Cohan filed against him right after he was fired. Well, let bygones be bygones, Cohan must have apologized and Mully was able to reunite the guys. Its odd how all of Run TMC is now back in the W's fold.

I love Nellie!!!! plus, he'll mentor Mario Elie in preparation of Elie taking over the team.

Nellie instantly brings cred back to the W's.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> "This is a very difficult day for me," said Warriors vice president Chris Mullin. "Mike is a terrific basketball coach who has enjoyed a great deal of success throughout his career."

Mullin added, "Based on this agreement, we will now focus our efforts in a different direction and do what we think is in the best interest for this team. We thank Mike for his contributions and certainly wish him well." </div>

Warriors, head coach Montgomery part ways

Does the different direction mean run & gun with Nellie Small Ball?

You guys just got penciled into the playoffs. Baron is just as good as Nash was probably better, and expect Murphy and Diogu to shine. Damn you guys got J-Rich too. Pietrus too. Damn you guys are stacked.

I just hope that Nellie demands some accountability for allowing/giving them freedom to play a looser offense.

This is a brillant stroke by Mully because this sure beats getting Al Harrington.

Nelson will take us to the playoffs at the very least. Warriors and Raiders are going back old school! I was on the fence aout going this year to watch a Warriors game at Oakland but Nelly's hiring just seal it for me.[IMG]

Wow, so it really did happen. When I first heard a rumor regarding a coaching change, I thought it was a false one. And, even if Monty would get canned, Nelson would have been the last guy I would have guessed to replace Monty.

Clearly, Nelson will do wonder with this club. Not only this team closely resembles Run TMC, he is a master of adjustment and we have tons of good at one thing and bad at another type of players. PO? I don't know. But, we will see.

Is this mean the end of Mullin era as well? Because, guys like Nelson just won't come to Warriors only to coach. My guess at this point is that Nelson will have a final say and Mullin will become a helper, just like PJ-Saint relationship.

Whenever Cohan made a decision, it turned out to be a big disaster. However, at this moment, I will give Cohan a big prop for hiring Nelson back despite Nelson's ugly departure and the lawsuit between Cohan and Nelson that dragged till 1999. Also, he ended Mullin-Monty era before this team passes point of no return.

Clearly, Nelson has huge task to solve, and the mess Mullin made won't go away. But, at least, there is a reason for a hope next season. Heck, this move definitely made me to renew NBA season ticket...

    Maybe this was Mullin's goal.

That may be so, but I am darn happy anyway [IMG] And, it's much better to talk about Nelson than masterbation. Mmm... Talk about old times... Nelson, J. George (Uhh...), and even potential Fitz-Brooks reunion at KNBR...

Wow. I am speechless. I thought this was some made up rumor. This is crazy. It makes me go back to the good old days when I first started watching basketball. Ahhh! Memories! I just hope Baron can be as good as Timmy, Jrich can be like Mitch, and Murphy can play like Mullin because we all know Dun wont do it. We also all know that if Dunleavy does not step up his play, Nelly will yank him out of there quicker than you can imagine. This also means no defense like how we started last year, but a lot more high scoring games like the ones from when Baron first arrived. If this happens, Baron stays happy and healthy, this should be a play off team. But for all of you now all of the sudden the dooms day clouds just cleared, refer to my memo for next season post...

In a sense, Dunleavy is the player Mullin always liked to have; a big forward who can handle the ball. If Nelson can't save Dunleavy, nobody will. Davis and Richardson should fit in right in, and we may be able to see Murphy at C a lot of times.

Of course, it doesn't mean everything is well even if Nelson pans out, because we still have a huge salaries to take care of. The best thing that can happen is that this team gets better so that our players become more tradable...

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Kensaku:</div><div class="quote_post">Wow.</div>My thoughts exactly....wow. I thought this was a joke...this is unbelievable. This brings hope back to the Bay Area basketball community. Maybe Cohan got some advice from Al Davis? I dont know if this makes us a playoff team but it definately steers us in the right direction. I like Monty but he will shine at the college ranks.

    Welcome back Nellie!
