AUBURN HILLS, Mich. ? As an NBA player, Detroit was Michael Curry?s first real home. Now it becomes the first stop in what most have long expected would be a long and successful career as an NBA coach.

The Pistons on Friday announced that Curry, who had two stints as a player with the Pistons, will join Flip Saunders? staff as an assistant coach next season. Curry replaces Ron Harper, whose two-year contract had expired.

The Pistons also announced the hiring of Jeff Weltman as director of basketball administration, essentially replacing director of player personnel Scott Perry, who left to become assistant general manager in Seattle. Weltman comes to the Pistons after five seasons as assistant general manager in Denver. Among Weltman?s duties will be coordinating draft preparation.

Curry comes to the Pistons from NBA offices where he served as vice president of player development.

?I?ve always been interested in coaching,? said Curry, who played with Joe Dumars during his first tour of duty with the Pistons. ?I like coaching. I like the management part of basketball. Just being involved in the game the past few years by being in the league office really helped me decide what I want to do right now. I probably decided sometime in January or February that if the right coaching opportunity came along that I?d be willing to do it this year.? </div>
