Now, I know this has been debunked as it was not part of a speech given by Krushchev, but rather it was a speech given by Secretary of Agriculture under the Eisenhower Administration, Ezra Taft Benson and is a recollection of a [rivate conversation between them: Excerpts from a speech by Secretary of Agriculture under the Eisenhower Administration, Ezra Taft Benson: "Your children will live under communism." Khrushchev said. "On the contrary," Secretary Benson replied, "My grandchildren will live in freedom as I hope that all people will." Khrushchev then retorted: "You Americans are so gullible. No, you won't accept Communism outright; but we'll keep feeding you small doses of Socialism until you will finally wake up and find that you already have Communism. We won't have to fight you; we'll so weaken your economy, until you fall like overripe fruit into our hands." http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081107035337AAOqYve
Yeah, not sure how this is anything but a poorly thought out chain mail like...point? I guess (not from BP himself). "communism" has little to do with our countries issues. It's greed and corruption among those in charge (ALL parties, no matter who is in office).
Are we talking Marxism or the communism we think of when we think of CCCP? Because no, neither have happened here.
Exactly which quotes have been debunked? In the 60s, TV ran free public service ads showing little marching boys training in Soviet uniform, overlaid by a thundering voice, "WE WILL BURY YOU." You guys don't realize how much propaganda there was. Is there something Khruschev really didn't say? He didn't say, "We will bury you?" When his motorcade drove by my Des Moines, Iowa school, the whole school stood on the front lawn to wave at him. He was very personable, laughing and childlike, waving back wildly as his limos sped by.
BP what exactly do you think "communism" actually looks like? Aside from the kibbutz system in the Jewish Levant I'm having a helluva time coming up with an actual example of "communism" as form of government - it certainly didn't exist behind the Iron Curtain. What we have now in our own country is definitely rampant corruption and plenty of ineptitude, but it's got nothing to do with any particular political ideology or party.
Yeah, please let us know what the point of this thread was. I think a lot of us must be missing it. barfo
I would say both countries have long abandoned their respective political identities and are being looted by the world's 1% club.
The point was for me to tell my Khruschev story for about the 2nd-3rd time on this board, not including about 3 times I told it while on ESPN. Thanks Prophet. You don't mind if I call you by your last name? If anyone would like to hear the story in even more detail, just ask, because that was just the outline. Tell me whether you want the 5-minute, 15-minute, or 30-minute version. I can also speak to groups if they pay for the limo and chips.
If the group wants to be enthralled at the campfire, I can also impart my rarely-told 2-hour version, but beer will have to be provided for everyone so I can stretch it out. Also I will need some ice to keep mine cold. It's a good story and improves everytime. I've told it since he visited America in 1959 and it's almost perfect. Have your group hold a fundraiser and then contact my agent.
