I personally think PA is overestimating how attractive this job is. I don't think we're going to get a GM overall who was as good as Pritchard. If that's the case, what if we split the job up, if not in title, but in responsibility? Here are the basic functions of a GM (as I see it) 1. Player evaluation 2. Knowledge of the CBA 3. Negotiating ability 4. Staff management Why not hire a guy like Rich Cho from OKC as your GM who understands the CBA, draft strategy and conceivably run the staff? Then promote Born or Buchanan to Asst GM to run player evaluation. Finally, hire a graybeard like John Gabriel or Rod Thorn as an advisor just to assist with trade or salary negotiations.
That can work, with 2 caveats. First, lines of communication and authority have to be clear. Sometimes, decisions need to be made quickly. Second, the team needs a sense of unity. If they see each others as rivals, rather than partners, things will melt down.
The fans will run the team using Twitter. We'll just tweet a trade and if PA likes he'll have some Vulcan do it.
I tend to agree that most candidates of high quality are going to shun working for such a dysfunctional organization even with all of the plusses (trade assets, owner willing to spend, etc.) At the end I guess they promote Buchanan to Assistant GM and Miller handles the phones.
Miller doesn't want the job. If he wanted to work he would have stayed at Nike. Miller wants a promotion to owner if and when PA finally decides to sell the team not a demotion to GM.
If "the internet" can be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize than we can handle being 6th man/GM. We're just that good!
I heard his Nike stock options gives him a personal net worth of $300mill. Plus there are some other retired Nike execs with large fortunes that would join a Miller led ownership group. But if that were to happen we'd have fans that would be afraid that the only reason Miller was buying the team was so he could move them to Beaverton and the Nike campus.
