I've always wondered this, what makes a good defender? Speed? Athleticism? Strength? Length? Brains? Obviously you have to have some good physical traits, but it doesn't seem like it's more mental, than physical? Does a player have to be "smart" to understand rotations, fight through screens, study game film of the player he's going up against? Because plenty of players in the NBA are quick, athletic, strong, and tall, some even smart, but that doesn't guarantee a good defender. Someone like Bruce Bowen doesn't really stand out much physically, but he's one of (or was) the best defenders in the league, along with Shane Battier. Neither are as physically gifted, as someone like, let's say Smush Parker. Yes, I know, you can laugh. But Smush Parker is quick, he's extremely athletic, he may not be the strongest guy on the court, but he's certainly not weak for a point guard. He has long arms, but isn't the smartest player in the world. So how is he a horrible defensively player? Is it because he doesn't try? Is it because he's too dumb to understand how to defend? Then you have guys like Michael Pietris, who apparently is as dumb as a rock, but solid defensively. So what gives? Is defense mental and based off of effort? Or are players just naturally gifted to play defense? What makes a good defender, and has any player ever entered the league and gone on to show noticeable improvements on defense? Because I know it's possible for somebody to improve offensively, it's happened countless of times in the past. But usually, if a player is drafted, and defense is one of their weaknesses, they're usually weak defensively their entire career.
I think the top flight defenders are a lil crazy. Like something really aint right. Look at Artest and Rodman. CRAZY PEOPLE ARE NUTS!
