Resolve the catching situation, take a flyer on Brad Penny, maybe get another bullpen arm. If Peavy would accept a trade to Boston, look into that. We don't really have to make any blockbuster moves. Making a hasty big counter-move would be the worst thing we could do.
I live in LA and Penny is NOT the solution for another starter. He always has a hot start but cools off/gets injured by the 2nd half. I would like Lowe to come back and/or possibly pick up one of the rejected closers(Fuentes?) to be the set-up man for Papelbon
Definitely not Lowe. He would be destroyed if he came back to the AL East. I like Penny as a low cost, low risk move. He's injury prone, I'm pretty sure he's dealing with an injury right now, but he'll come cheap and its no biggie if he doesn't pan out. If he does pan out, well, this guy started the all-star game a couple of years ago. I don't want Fuentes. There's no sense in wasting money on him, when we have 3 guys (Masterson, Oki, R. Ramirez) who can be legit setup men for Papelbon. The catching rotation has to be shored up first, and then, in a perfect world, we make a cheap signing for the 4 or 5 spot in the rotation, and catch lightning in a bottle.
Smoltz will be the low risk, low cost pickup for the rotation. They are set at every position right now except catcher, could use help in the rotation, but we'll be fine even if we don't get it.
