<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Workout scheduled: The Mavericks are going to bring in 44-year-old Kevin Willis for a workout Thursday to find out if he might be a viable option for their vacant roster spot. This is a sign of how shallow the pool of available big men is. Willis was one of the most remarkably svelte athletes in the game when he was playing, but the 7-footer has been retired since the end of the 2004-05 season.Willis won a championship with San Antonio in 2003 and last played for Atlanta. Willis played 20 seasons.</div>Caught this on the DMN. I think it's reaching, nonetheless he's a veteran and good for 6 hard fouls if he does well in the workout. Also, read on realgm about Desmond Mason's interest in playing for the Mavs next season. Like Mo Pete, he'd be a nice option to pick up during the summer.
What's with all the retired guys trying to come back? I don't think Willis can contribute to any team at this point of his life, he's too old.
Yowzas, that guy is old. I met this guy that was a trainer with Desmond Mason, I believe. He was the cousin of a friend from work. He was bragging about how he was going to keep him from getting injured and stuff. Haha.<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (ElMaster @ Mar 28 2007, 12:25 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>What's with all the retired guys trying to come back? It's not a good idea to go into the playoffs with 2 centers, regardless of how bad the third one is.
Well, I was wondering when they'd bring someone in and have them workout, but I'm really suprised that they are bringing Willis in. I do think its better than not signing anyone. Something is better than nothing even if its not a lot, know what I mean? Gives us 6 extra fouls and he wont be making mental mistakes like Pops would be making. He's also a legit 6-11 body and not an undersized center at 6-9 or something. Its not like he'd be playing more than maybe 10 minutes every other game or something. Probably less than that. He wont be taking anyone's minutes either. Could we do better? Maybe, I'm not really sure. There really isnt a ton a centers out there on the free agent market this late in the season. We want a guy who wont be making mental mistakes on both offense and defense in the playoffs. Rok and I have talked about this before and there really arent a ton of guys. Greg Ostertag anyone? :thumbdn1: I'm sure if we sign Willis, we wont be a problem and will just add some depth, and veteran leadership in the locker room. I dont see how we could lose if we sign him for the rest of the season. Its not like some great 7 foot center is going to fall into our lap in the next week. I personally would rather we got someone like this than some raw 7 footer from the D-league.
Update:Willis will be brought in for a 2nd workout, Mavs like what they saw but want to see if he holds up with consecutive workouts. Credit to David Lord.
Update: Ortegal and Followil were just talking about this for pregame. Tomorrow he has a physical. This will determine if he is on the team or not. They both sound confident he will be on the team. They said he will be playing this time next week
Well it looks like this is going to get done to an extent. Willis will take a physical tomorrow and if he passes it, he'll be signing a 10 day contract. He'll join the team in Phoenix and start getting some practie time. Avery said he wants Willis to get comfortable with the team before just throwing him out there. He'll most likely make his debut for the Mavericks against the Nuggets. If everything goes well, he'll be signed for the rest of the season. :dribble:EDIT: Just saw you posting the same thing Lazy.
OMFGI love (not literly) Kevin Willis!!!uhGreat move by the Mavs, I like to hear the nba commentators and espn people talk about how old he is lol.Seriosly, he will help out IMO. He had been in the league for so damn long and did so much, he' can defently help the mavs out by just being there. On the court I don't expect to play much but when he does I don't see why he won't be hustling and doing what he's suppsosed to do.
