Not letting their children hear a speech by the president? Challenging his citizenship? Toting guns to events where he is speaking? Calling him Hitler? These things seem so beyond the pale. I just don't get it. What happened to respect for the office? Do they think this helps their cause? I think to most Americans they look like disrespectful loons, but maybe that's my liberal bias.
I think all the people who call him Hitler or take guns to his events aren't really "right wing" wackos. They are just wackos. Most people who know (or even just follow) politics would not do either of those things, and even republicans would show him respect and refer to him as Mr. President. I have no doubt the Denny Crane would be nothing but respectful if given the opportunity to meet Obama, Shooter on the other hand would probably live up to his screen name.

Very true. And it makes the "job" much harder than necessary. Of course, in some ways that's why they act out in the way they do. I think the knee-jerk reaction that both sides have, has way too much clout. Although I think the right's knee-jerk reaction has more clout in congress, than the left does. There was loud opposition to the War in Iraq and the Patriot act, but congress (albeit, more R dominated) didn't do jack about it. The opposition now to the UHC and pretty much anything Obama does, gets coverage and made into a much larger group than it really is. I've said this before, the right is far more organized and business like when it comes to their party, their "protests" and their voice. The left has a very small fringe group, that is poorly organized and has very little clout or voice. Was there anything, ANYTHING, that the left protested about (in the last 12 years) that has gotten as much continual coverage as the health care protesters have gotten? Yah, the protests over the war were covered well, but only as long as the media deemed it necessary. Once it served it's purpose, the coverage of the protests stopped almost immediately (as did the actual # of them). For me, the media is spinning things to best suit their financial needs. There isn't anyone on TV who doesn't call out the BS, cept for The Daily Show. And no one (outside of it's fanbase) takes them seriously. Because, you know, it's a comedy show. So like you said, these idiots (on both sides) make the jobs so much harder.
I didn't vote for Bush either time... and I don't remember a lot of protesting or negativity for a good 2-3 years. Seems like we had disagreements about how to go about things... but for the most part everyone supported the president. Very different now.
I didn't vote for Bush either. But surely you remember he was under constant assault from the left, starting with being selected not elected as president, illegitimate, a drunkard, intellectual lightweight, etc. Only for a brief time right after 9/11 did they feel it was inappropriate to be on the attack. I absolutely don't think anything of that sort about Obama. I do think his presidency has been a miserable time for everyone except the bankers who got bail out money (and the unions who were given ownership of GM and Chrysler), that he was quite inexperienced for the job (as candidates from both parties pointed out during the campaign), and disagree with the outrageous levels of spending he's taken on. Those are actual policy issue disagreements. I don't hate the guy, think he's a war criminal, is illegitimate, etc.

Maybe Seattle is a lot more liberal than Portland, but as far as I can recall there were constant complaints about Bush "stealing" an election right from day one. Many people (Democrats) I know didn't trust him and the 9/11 Truthers blamed Bush (and/or the Jews) seemingly from 9/12. This whole thread seems like a joke to me given how much abuse was heaped on Bush for so many years. Of course, he DESERVED much of the abuse, just as Obama arguably does right now. Ed O.

Gee, I don't recall it that way. The Left was furious over the 2000 election, and screamed that Bush "stole" it from Gore. Remember all the uproar about hanging chads and voter intimidation, etc., etc.? The libs went around saying he wasn't their president, and that his election was illegitimate, blah, blah, blah. They were on his back from day one.

Nonsense. I voted for him both times, and I'll tell anyone. It's the people who voted for Obama who should be ashamed. Obama's polling numbers are already lower than Bush's were at this point in his presidency.
Heh. I know it's easy to lump people who are dubious of left-leaning policies as some sort of homogeneous bloc, but I will be the first to admit that Bush made mistakes... including some big ones. I think that I'd disagree with many of the lefties on this board, though, about what they were. Ed O.
