So I always see these web banners saying "Test Your IQ", and for a long time I've wondered what mine was. I don't trust a single website or test, so I took several...over a dozen. Not to brag (well okay, maybe just a little) but my mean and median scores were 143 and 140.5 respectively. Do you guys think I should actually trust these kind of results and try to apply for Mensa? What is your IQ? I should note that having that high of a score isn't unrealistic for me. I can buy it, as would most people who know me.

I Google'd "IQ Test" and found more tests via links. It started with me finding a crappy 10-question IQ Test where I knew that the results couldn't be accurate...And the kicker is that it said I was wrong when I know I got every question correct. I took http://www.einsteinquiz.com/iq/ and they said that a "right angle" was not 90 degrees. It's pretty bad when the test is wrong. Please don't take that test and use the results. Most of the sites listed above have tests that use several different types of knowledge - word association, math/logic, pattern recognition, etc. Some (such as the iqtest.dk) only have one type. I remarkably posted good scores regardless. I think my range was 132 to 158 over the course of the tests I took.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081030214818AAuCSP6 No such thing. It's a Gaussian, which means the tail extends to infinity, even though the chances of someone getting that score fall off exponentially. While the average IQ score on an official test is 100 with a standard deviation of about 15, internet IQ tests have more like an average of 120+ with a standard deviation of about 60. I've taken most of them for fun, and my score has changed more than 60 points from one to another. They are NOT accurate, and give everyone inflated scores. Just look at the last 1000 times someone asked 'is my IQ good?'. Of course, the tests they set up online will all have some maximum score, that plenty of people have reached by taking it over and over again, but the official tests shouldn't have one.
I took a "free" online IQ test recently, and when I had made it all the way through the questions, they told me I had to sign up for something to get my test results. I logged out and never went back. Does that make me smart?
I think Denny answered the 'should you trust the results' question. As for applying to Mensa, why would you? Do you have a need to give someone money to tell you you are smart? Your mom should be able to fulfill that role just as well as Mensa, and for free. Mensa is about as valuable in the real world as being high school valedictorian, or having a third nipple. There might be a few people who think it is cool, but more are going to think it's creepy. barfo
Well I don't want to brag or anything, but I just took one of those tests and got a 245 . . . I'll stop there, thank you very much . . . I'm a fucking genius.
Ouch, fair enough. Just thought I'd throw out the question. As for the tests I listed, there is definitely some differences in terms of difficulty and length that can affect individual outcomes. For example, if it's a math-based question I doubt that I'd miss it. That being said, I would guess my IQ is still REALLY above 130. In an interesting twist, looking at this table, it's interesting to note that my estimated IQ (according to websites) was around 140, which is almost an exact match to my SAT score of 1430. (http://www.iqcomparisonsite.com/SATIQ.aspx) In any case, not having a job gives me time to do this kind of crap.
