Okay I'm listening to 790 and John Lopez and the other idiot hosting the show are actually trying to compare Yao to Hakeem.....since all us true rockets fans know this is idiotic (and I'm saying this as a big Yao fan), when his career is said and done with, where do you think Yao will be ranked among the all time great big men?...or do you think that he is actually one of the top 10-15 big men to ever play the game already.

Based on career accomplishments, obviously not. But based on his ability right now, I'd say he's already one of the top 15 centers of all time. Closer to 10 than 15, probably.

Centers you can definitively say were "greater" than Yao:

    Hakeem
    Shaq
    Wilt
    Russell
    Kareem
    Robinson
    Moses
    Ewing

After that, there's a big dropoff I think. Walton, Mikan, Reed were arguably greater. Maybe you throw in Mourning in there. Any others I'm missing?

I think he has the chance of being better than Ewing before it's all said and done with, but I don't think he'll ever touch Wilt, Hakeem, Kareem, Moses, Shaq, or Russell

I'm not a big fan of Lopez....this dude actually thinks that if you put Yao on those teams in '94 and '95 that the Rockets would've won those titles....the reason being...their numbers were similar...........that's the stupidest thing that I've heard in a while.....

hear the entire debate at the below website.....it's split into 3 parts (for Wednesday April 25th)...part 3 is where Lopez states that Yao could've lead the rockets to a title in 94 and 95 and that the Center position is just as talented now as it was back then.

Yao is still way too early in his career to be compared to them right now.. I mean he hasn't even accomplished anything yet.. But, in terms of talent I would possibly at him at top 20 or 25.

yeah, in terms of potential, I would definitely place him in top 10. After all, he is pretty lucky to have a great teacher who helps him improve day in and day out.

I definitely think he'll crack top 10, but top 5??? or 7??...I seriously doubt it.....Hakeem,Wilt,Kareem,Russell,Shaq,D-Rob,and Malone will always probably be ahead of him.

no but if you look at it like this: Yao is really only gonna have 2 center threats throughout his career: Dwight Howard and Greg Oden and they are both young and Yao can dominate them when hes in his prime. Shaq is not a factor since his prime is gone. If Yao can lead his team to 2 or more Championships which is VERY possible, then he can crack the top 7 maybe even top 5

it depends how great Howard and Oden will be if he cracks top 7...Howard right now has a lot of potential, but his game isn't polished enough to consider him "great" yet...and the verdict is still out on Oden.

Hay, don't forget about Andrew Bynum..[IMG] He may take alot longer though, considering that he is way too young as of now.

i think yao is 26 so next season or the one after that i expect some major improvement. this is the perfect year for him to get some playoff exp. before his prime begins...mcgrady will be a key in producing a great center in Yao
