Long after Karl Malone had left the Jazz, the question lingered: Where were they going to get another Mailman?

Looks like they finally found one — but it's not Carlos Boozer.

    It's Andrei Kirilenko.

This week he's saying he definitely wants to be traded. Which contradicts what he said on the Russian Web site Sport Express Daily in June, under the headline "I AM NOT GOING TO LEAVE UTAH."

"I can say that nobody is to blame for it," Kirilenko said at the time. "I don't want this situation to repeat next season."

Oh, and in contrast to early February when he said, "I don't want to be traded, and I don't want to move to another team. It's not like I want to be traded."

But after leading Russia to the European championship last week, the conciliatory talk was out the window. He reportedly blogged in Sport Today that Sloan's "style and system is not suitable" and he wants his transfer papers. "Last season was unsuccessful and a serious disappointment. I have thought a lot about this and have come to the decision that I want to leave Utah," Kirilenko wrote, as translated to English for the Deseret Morning News.

Here we go again. A regular Malonefest. Eighteen years of the Mailman reversing field, contradicting himself and occasionally griping, and now we're back where we started. Remember when each new Mail Eruption brought an avalanche of back-and-forth publicity?

Malone would fire off something about wanting to be traded, or being disrespected and underpaid, and owner Larry H. Miller would respond in kind. It was a week or two before things subsided.

Now, same thing — except that the new Mailman resembles Jack Skellington in "Nightmare Before Christmas."

The latest round of trade talk was spurred by Kirilenko's outstanding play in the European championships this summer, where he averaged 18 points and nearly seven rebounds — roughly twice his regular season average for the Jazz. Kirilenko spent most of the NBA year brooding over playing time and the lack of touches. It culminated in a crying episode prior to a practice in Houston during the playoffs.

He said he didn't know what to do or where to turn.

But by mid-June he was back singing, "We Can Work it Out."

"I am not going to blame the head coach for my mistakes for Jerry Sloan did his job and brought positive results — as Utah entered the top four — NBA clubs," he said on Sport Express Daily's Web site three months ago.
