In this Peter Vecsey article, Colangelo tells us that Embry compares Bargnani to Alvan Adams. I get BC's comparison to Okur because I've seen the dude play for a while now (I'd hope that Andrea could become a better player down the road, but whatever). However, Adams is before my time and I've never really heard of the dude. His career stats aren't all that bad and apparently his jersey's up in Phoenix's arena. Anybody have any idea what kind of player he was and can they make sense of this comparison? I'm just curious.
Adams was a smallish C for the Suns in the 1970s and maybe 1980s. What he lacked in size, he made up for with an all around skilled game. He was a great defender for his size and a brilliant passer. He shot with range and was quite good in the lane as well. He formed a big three with Walter Davis and Paul Westphal that went to the finals, but otherwise fell short in the playoffs in spite of strong records. He was probably a top 5 C for a few seasons. I don't remember that he was highly touted coming out of college, so he was something of a surprise/underdog success story.
Thanks a lot Denny. It's amazing how one offseason of defensive improvement totally changes your perception of a player's future. The last couple seasons we all hoped for a Dirk clone, but knew that if his offense didn't continue to develop at a dramatic rate he'd more than likely end up another Vladimir Radmonivic. Now that he's turned into our best post defender, suddenly the possibilities are endless. People are digging up some forgotten names to describe his unorthodox game.
It's my passion. Getting jersey's of players who no one knows and who are only good for about 5-10 games.
I thought my UNLV Larry Johnson jersey was nice until I went to a game at the Thomas & Mack and saw like ten guys wearing it. Nuts.
