But as rosters begin to thin, the Heat should be able to get a better read on veteran point guards who could shake free by the Oct. 30 cutdown to the NBA's 15-man roster limit.

So for those who don't see a suitable third point guard on the Heat's current roster, some low-budget types of possibilities the Heat might be able to consider:

-- Jeff McInnis. A buyout from the Nets appears inevitable, but word is the Heat is not exactly overwhelmed by the possibility.

-- Travis Diener. The Magic is unlikely to move Keyon Dooling, who could wind up as Orlando's starting shooting guard. But Diener, Dwyane Wade's former Marquette backcourt partner, might just shake free.

-- Someone from the Cavaliers, who have Eric Snow, David Wesley, Damon Jones, Larry Hughes and several young prospects capable of playing the point.

-- Orien Greene. The Pacers are loaded at point guard, with Jamaal Tinsley, Darrell Armstrong and Sarunas Jasikevicious among their options, possibly putting Greene back on the market.

-- Someone from the Hawks, who are loaded with undersized guards such as Speedy Claxton, Tyronn Lue, Royal Ivey and Salim Stoudemire.

-- Dan Dickau. The Blazers also are loaded with options at the point, including Jarrett Jack, Juan Dixon and Sergio Rodriguez.

-- Keith McLeod, with Golden State also loaded with point guards.

-- Jason Hart, with Sacramento possibly going in other directions behind Mike Bibby.</div>
