After the Blazers make it clear that they're not going to tank, Nurk returns, and Dame leads the team on its inevitable spring run to grab the 8th seed, who's likely to be available to be that post-deadline signing who can help the Blazers playoff chances? Olshey has the Hood injured player money to be able to outbid other teams that can only offer the vet minimum. It would sure be nice if they could get another wing, maybe one who is a defensive specialist? If you want to post negative stuff, rip Olshey, demand that CJ's traded, etc., please go use one of the myriad of threads dedicated to those thoughts.
Buyout candidates? No one jumps out as a realistic possibility. I do wonder if the Lakers would let Cousins go though if he recovers in time to play this season. McGee and Howard have been good for them, don’t see where he’d get minutes. I’d target Tyson Chandler. Houston doesn’t play him but he can still help a team. He’s also played in Stotts’ system before.
Iggy wouldn’t come here if he was bought out anyway. Our best chance to land him would be in a trade.
Bazemore and a draft pick, at a minimum? Doubt that Olshey is willing to do that until he's sure that the team is going to make the playoffs.
Ideally, Kevin Love. Cleveland finds that nobody will take his contract and he throws such a shitfit that they agree on a buyout. He's one of the few that might actually choose Portland. But this scenario (apart from Cleveland being unlikely to find someone to take his contract) is very unlikely, because he'd have to be willing to leave a SHIT TON of money on the table.
Yes, we've sunk so low that 2020 Tyson Chandler would be a huge help to this team. This is the first season I've been okay with getting Whiteside. This is the first season I've been okay with getting Carmelo. And this is the first season I've been okay with getting Chandler. Of course, that's largely a function of what we'd have had to give up to get them at various times. Since the answer this year is "nothing", and we are indeed desperate, sure. Why not?
the problem with that is Memphis would be taking on money so the pick would have to be a first since we don’t have any seconds to offer until ‘22. One other possibility would be Portland taking on Kyle Anderson’s contract.
In looking at the potential candidates, I don't see a good option or fit on the buy-out market. There are a few G-League players that I think Portland ought to cycle through on 10-day contracts to see if we can find a passable rotation player for the future. The fact that we could've added 2 additional players and still haven't done so - makes me think that there's a major financial resistance to make any move. Therefore, even if there is a good buy-out player, I'm not sure the Blazers even pursue signing them.
so far two pretty plugged in (with regards to the blazers) reporters, one local, one national, have mentioned that Portland is trying to, or will do something trade wise before the deadline. If true, there’s a possibility that the reason they haven’t signed anyone to a ten day is because they need the roster spot and don’t feel like wasting money on someone they’d have to cut to make room/wouldn’t be here long term anyway. When you’re trading a big contract like Baze/Whiteside, the odds are good you’ll be taking multiple players in return. In the meantime, the hope is they stay afloat with what they’ve got, and then make a run once Nurk returns/a move is made.

This thread is premature. We signed Enes only after the deadline when we realized we needed a big after the Hood trade. Let's see what shakes loose after the deadline this year.

That makes absolutely no sense though.... Blazers have 2 open roster spots right now (15th guy & a temp 16th guy due to injuries). They have all the roster flexibility they need. The point of the 10-day contracts are to help you get through a tough stretch due to injuries. When you only have 9-healthy bodies suiting up, there's absolutely a need to have an additional guy. Even if there's a 95% chance that they never take off the warm-up, there's a need to have someone on the bench just in case your only guy over 6'-8" comes down with the flu and can't play... If it wasn't 100% financially motivated, they would've already done something. Also, I'll believe these trade rumors when I see it... IF there is a move, I guarantee that there will involve major financial motivation for Portland.
Sorry if this is negative @e_blazer, just responding to several things in this thread: 1) Iggy is refusing to report to a team currently in the playoffs and ahead of the Blazers. No chance he wants to join this team. It would also be incredibly stupid in my opinion to use assets to trade for someone that is all but guaranteed to not be on the team in 2020-21. 2) The team was doing way better last year at the time of the buyout market so the level of player available likely won't be the same as Kanter. 3) The extra money from the Hood DPE is basically worthless for signing someone in the buyout market. It is useful to use in trades or for claiming a player off waivers. Most buyout candidates sign for the minimum because it's usually worked into their buyout that they get less of it if they sign for more than the minimum. The only exception to that is if you sign the player for more years with the extra money but using the Hood DPE can't be for more than this season.
Why not? The Steipen Rule doesn't apply to 2nd rounders. A team could trade all their 2nd rounders for the next 7 years (can't go any further into the future than that) if they wanted to.
